Description:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Makes regular rounds on antepartum and post partum patients each morning with the supervision of attending OBGYN staff.
  • Works with OBGYN Consultants, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, physiotherapists, physician house staff, and other members of the health care team in the development and delivery of the overall patient care program.
  • Interaction and collaboration with the above team members as well as Family doctors, midwives, anesthetists and OB Internal Medicine specialists is an expectation.
  • Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, medication reconciliations as per College and organizational standards, policies, and guidelines.
  • Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders in Cerner.
  • Assesses patients who present to the Urgent Care Centre providing history taking, physical examination, investigation and differential diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Orders appropriate investigations and follow-up of results.
  • Arranges consultations with other departments for patient care.
  • Responding to emergencies in hospital, in consultation with attending OBGYN staff.
  • Communicates with families, consultant physicians, referring and family physicians/Midwives concerning patient management plans.
  • Provides surgical assistance in the Obstetric and or Gynecology Operating rooms at BCWH as needed.
  • Participates in Obstetric transport advice, transport coordination and acts as a transport physician under the oversight of the MFM attending or transport advisor.
  • Supporting patients requiring advanced therapies including management of Hypertension / Pre-eclampsia and Chorioamnionitis / Sepsis.
  • Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence including: interpretation of fetal heart rate tracings, vascular access, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes, insertion of FECG or IUPC, urinary catheters, removal of abdominal drains, wound care including incision and drainage of infection and wound packing.
  • Participates in quality improvement projects.
  • Provides teaching and supervision for medical students and residents.
  • Attends morbidity and mortality rounds and other QA/QI and educational/research sessions.
  • Complies with Associate Physician programs CPD reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Minimum of two (2) years of accredited postgraduate training in OBGYN, verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC).
  • Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs).
  • Must meet the CPSBC’s English language proficiency requirements. Must be eligible for registration with the CPSBC in the Associate Physician class.
  • Have Canadian Citizenship, be a permanent resident or be legally able to live and work in British Columbia.
  • The applicant must be able to perform within the scope of Associate Physician duties and responsibilities. The applicant should have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work within a team.

  • able to communicate and collaborate with families about health findings, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and follow up

  • They will be required to document in accordance with CPSBC and organizational standards, policies, and guidelines.

Responsibilities:

The Associate Physician practices under the direction and supervision of an attending Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist and works in a structured team-based specialty care setting to increase capacity and service delivery. The AP functions as a member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology which includes the general Obstetrics, general Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine Divisions.
