Description:

To assist the Point of Care Coordinator to implement the Trust wide Point of Care (POCT) Guidelines. The post holder will work under both direct and indirect supervision on the wards and in the departments of the Trust that use Point of Care devices, and in the Pathology laboratories.
Following training, they will become proficient in the use of these devices; oversee the operation in the clinical areas, ensuring that Standard Operating Procedures are followed, Quality Control and Quality Assurance is performed, training and assessing users as appropriate.
To be proficient in the use of all Point of Care devices currently used within the Trust e.g. Blood Gas Analysers, Glucose Monitors, Pregnancy testing strips, urine dip tests etc.
Monitor users of these devices follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) devised by the Point of Care Coordinator, advising the POCT Co-ordinator of non-compliance.
Assist the POCT Coordinator implement a Quality Assurance (QA) scheme for all devices and /or users of these devices.
Assist with the distribution and processing of samples for the general EQA participation of the Blood Sciences Department as required.
Monitor that all relevant Quality Control (QC) is performed on these devices, and records are maintained appropriately, advise the POCT Co-ordinator of non-compliance.
Appropriately package and distribute QA samples, collate results and report back the results from these QA specimens, informing participants in the scheme of their performance.
Solve routine problems with Point of Care devices, calling on the POCT Co-ordinator/ POCT BMS for more serious problems and / or the maintenance engineers where appropriate.
Monitor maintenance of instruments.
To train clinical, nursing and laboratory staff in the use of POCT equipment, ensuring compliance with Trust POCT guidelines and procedures
Support the POCT Coordinator in the investigation of incidents and errors if required, to ensure service improvement.
