DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

MITRE is dedicated to solving problems that provide safety, security, and economic prosperity for all individuals and American businesses. MITRE is seeking an Associate Research and Data Analyst to support the growing work within the Commerce Department of the Treasury, Economics, and Commerce Division within the Center for Enterprise Modernization FFRDC.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Typically requires less than 1 year of related experience with a related Bachelor’s degree in, data, statistics, math, or a related field with business and mathematics coursework or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Statistical software package or programming language experience such as Stata, R, Python or others
  • Strong communication skills, initiative, and experience working both independently and collaboratively
  • Knowledge of the Department of Commerce mission and strategic goals
  • Ability to work on open-ended problems in a team setting that requires independent contribution
  • Strong initiative and work ethic with a desire to learn
  • Excellent organizational and inter-personal skills
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior internship or work experience in a research environment
  • Familiarity with disciplines related to the Commerce mission (e.g., trade, supply chain, data, economics, climate, spectrum, space, equity)

The candidate will gain real-world experience by working alongside subject matter experts to support MITRE’s work with the Department of Commerce. The work includes:

  • Performing data cleaning, visualization, and analysis in standard statistical and graphics software languages such as R, Stata, and Excel
  • Performing quantitative analysis on and glean insights from real-world datasets
  • Applying scientific methods, processes, algorithms, and techniques to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data, leveraging expertise in computer science, mathematics, and related fields.
  • Using domain knowledge and research methodologies to frame focused, actionable questions and hypotheses about sponsor and business priorities.
  • Conducting literature reviews and qualitative research on topics pertinent to the Department of Commerce
  • Engaging with sponsors and project leaders to scope and prioritize tasks
  • Presenting findings to sponsors both as written reports and as presentation

The candidate will be encouraged to attend research seminars and presentations given by MITRE and external speakers to broaden their exposure to work that matters to the government.
