About Us
The Supreme Court of Victoria (the Court) is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts. Associate Judges are supported by Associates who assist in the management and coordination of the Judge’s judicial, ceremonial, court management, administrative and legal research responsibilities.
About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists to work with the Honourable Associate Justice Hetyey within the Supreme Court of Victoria. His Honour hears a variety of civil matters primarily in the Commercial Court, but also in the Common Law Division, including interlocutory matters and trials.
The Court is seeking applications from legally qualified individuals to fill an Associate vacancy working initially for Associate Justice Hetyey commencing June 2024.

Responsibilities:

  • Legal research and participation in judgment production process
  • Clerking in court (including virtually)
  • Liaising with Court staff, the public and the profession
  • Document management
  • Proofreading and editing judgments
    The role requires a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism as you will be working closely with Judges, court staff, legal practitioners, and members of the public.
    About You

To be successful in the role of Associate you will possess the following:

  • Law degree
  • An excellent academic record
  • Highly developed legal research skills
  • Demonstrated ability in statutory interpretation
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to confidently and accurately convey information over the telephone, in writing and in person to members of the legal profession, the public and the media
  • Exceptional organisational and problem solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Excellent computer literacy and administrative experience - Strong administration and organisational skills
  • Well-developed proofreading skills with proficiency in grammar
  • Post-graduate legal experience, although not mandatory, is highly desirable

The successful candidate will require excellent written and oral communication skills, organisational skills, and the ability to work in a team environment. The Associate will be required to provide high-level legal support and administrative services both in chambers and in the courtroom. As this is a busy chambers, the role requires excellent time management skills, an ability to prioritise workload, a strong customer service focus and a capacity to communicate at all levels. High-level research skills, strong interpersonal skills, organisational skills and post graduate professional experience preferred.
