- $90,199 - $120,760 + 15.4% super

The Bureau undertakes research in fulfillment of its responsibilities as a national research agency, contributing to the development of weather and climate applications for the needs of the Australian community, supporting the Bureau’s operational services, and advancing meteorological and earth system science in Australia and globally.
The Bureau of Meteorology Research Program, in collaboration with the operational areas of the Bureau, carries out the main research activities in the Bureau in the areas of Earth System Modelling (ESM) including weather, ocean, seasonal prediction and in Weather and Climate Information. The research work is carried out on high performance computing (HPC) platforms at the Bureau and at a collaboration site, the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), based at Australian National University.
The Atmospheric Modelling Research Scientist will be a member of the Atmospheric Modelling Team within the Research Program. This team conducts research to develop and improve the Bureau’s regional high-resolution atmospheric modelling systems to support improved prediction on weather and climate timescales.
The position involves conducting research, both independently and under guidance, to contribute to the production of high-resolution climate projections and the evaluation of generated datasets. The role will lead and make significant contributions to technical documents, scientific documentation suitable for peer review, and guidance for users of the model output.
The position will liaise with Bureau of Meteorology staff involved in providing climate data and other products and services to decision makers in government, industry and the community. The position will assist in liaising with funding agencies as well as with other national and international organisations that collaborate with the Bureau on numerical prediction. The position will be supervised by the Atmospheric Modelling Team Leader.
The Atmospheric Modelling Research Scientist will:
- Design and undertake high-level investigations and assessments of numerical models of the atmosphere.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, technical or research reports and present results at scientific forums.
- Apply knowledge of High Performance Computing technology applicable to meteorological modelling systems to achieve results.
- Work successfully in a team to deliver project outcomes, whilst also developing and testing individual ideas.
- Clearly communicate and document scientific and technical matters to a wide range of collaborators and stakeholders.
- Engage in collaborative activities within the UM Partnership Regional Model Evaluation and Development program.
