Are you a Qualified Nurse who would like to work with young people aged 10-17 in a Secure Children’s Home?
Vulnerable children are placed in Secure Children Homes when they are remanded to custody by the courts or are serving a custodial sentence. They usually have a range of complex needs and may have missed a lot of education , have unmet emotional and physical health needs and have suffered a great deal of trauma in their lives. SCHs provide a safe place where these vulnerable children can receive the care, education and support they need, with the aim of encouraging them to develop a range of personal skills, supported by changes in behaviour and attitude, which will enable them to manage safely and responsibly when they return to the wider community.
The Mental Health Practitioner role at Vinney Green Secure Children’s Home is focused on developing meaningful therapeutic relationships based on trust, acceptance and understanding whilst empowering young people aged 10 to 17 years old that are on their criminal justice pathway. The role is to complete Assessments with all new young people that are admitted to Vinney Green Secure Children’s Home using the Comprehensive Health Assessment Tool – CHAT. The Mental Health Practitioner will jointly provide appropriate, effective interventions alongside the Multi- Disciplinary Team, Residential and Education staff.
To deliver high quality, compassionate and evidence-based care to young people during their stay at Vinney Green Secure children’s Home using a broad range of interventions and person-centered approaches which promote health and independence.
To take responsibility for assessing and planning, implementing and evaluating interventions as part of a multi-disciplinary Health and Wellbeing Team delivering a co-ordinated package of care tailored to individual needs.
The Health and Wellbeing Team is hosted by South Gloucestershire Council at Vinney Green Secure Children’s Home and works alongside the Care and Education Teams to help and support young people during their time in the Home. The team is composed of Psychologists, Mental Health Practitioners, a Substance Misuse Practitioner, and Occupational Therapist and a Speech and Language Therapist as well as a Team Leader and a Team Administrator, all employed by AWP. Physical healthcare and input into the team is provided by a doctor and nurse employed by another organisation.
