Description:

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY MANAGERIAL Assists the Departmental Manager in the organisation and control of all patient care and treatment maintaining high standards of care. Develops leadership skills both professional and managerial. Assists in ensuring effective communication with all levels of staff and the whole multidisciplinary team. Assists in assessing the overall resource requirements for the Department.
Assists in implementing and maintaining all policies and ensures staff compliance. Initiates and develops new ideas for the improvement of services to patients in consultation with the Departmental Manager. Assists in producing staff rotas, creating shift patterns which meet the care needs of the patients. Assists in considering skill mix to develop a workforce capable of meeting patient needs.
In Departmental Managers absence, investigates and reports on complaints from patients/relatives/carers and staff and reports to Departmental Manager or Matron. Investigates and reports accidents and untoward occurrences and reports to Departmental Manager or Matron. In Departmental Managers absence attends regular meetings with Matron and other Departmental Managers in the Group. Provides effective channels of communication.
In Departmental Managers absence team briefs all staff reportable to Departmental Manager. Assists in fostering an environment that empowers staff and is conducive to change and development. Maintains a safe environment in the Department for patients/staff and visitors. Follows all Health & Safety policies.
Manages effectively, efficiently and economically all available resources both human and commodities. Co-operates in the trials of equipment and resources. Ensures the safe custody and storage of drugs held in the Department and the practice of a regular checking system. Is involved in the recruitment, selection and retention of staff.
Ensures the disciplinary procedure is followed. Collaborates with professions allied to medicine. Attends and assists in ward/department meetings. PROFESSIONAL Follows the NMC Codes of Conduct/Practice.
Develops research skills in self and others that promotes evidence based practice. Maintains an environment conducive to learning for all staff in training. Is involved in educational audit and liaises with Link Lecturer. Assists in implementing and developing systems of care delivery.
Adheres to the Patients Charter, Community Care Acts and other statutory legislation. Ensures the secure storage of ward/department documentation. Exercise personal accountability for their practice and ensure that any enlargement or adjustment to practice is achieved without the scope of professional practice. Assists in developments relating to clinical governance.
STAFF/SELF DEVELOPMENT Agrees personal development plan. Assists in performing Appraisals on all reportable department based staff; identifies training needs. Assists in maintaining accurate training records. Assists in ensuring successor planning.
Ensures the environment and resources available for staff are conducive to job satisfaction and high morale. Assists in ensuring that all staff attends statutory training sessions as per Trust Policy and NMC Regulations. Supports key workers. Is familiar with the responsibilities of the Departmental Manager.
Assists in providing an Induction Programme for all staff. Encourages all trained staff to maintain a personal and professional profile. Is involved in clinical supervision. Assists in setting standards in collaboration with Departmental Manager.
Assists in ensuring standards are audited as per QA Calendar and reports sent to Matron. Cascades standards and audit skills to junior staff. Assists in maintaining accurate sickness records and follows Trust Sickness Policy. Assists in ensuring staff take allocated holiday entitlement, maintaining accurate records.
TECHNOLOGY Assists in ensuring staff are trained in the correct usage of equipment. Co-operates with Maintenance Programmes. Assists in maintaining an accurate Asset Register. Assists in recording appropriate patient and staff statistical data.
Assists in keeping accurate records of equipment on loan/hire
