Responsibilities:

MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB

The role involves the management and leadership of a team of Occupational Therapists working within Care of the Elderly. This includes the day to day running of the team as well as supporting with service and staff development. The role involves working closely with the other team leads across OT and ensuring the site is well supported. You may be required to deputise for the Acute OT manager if required.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To be responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of Occupational Therapy as a specialist clinician, within the Elderly Care wards, including assessment, treatment planning, carrying out treatment and discharge planning of own client caseload.

  • To develop and implement specialist treatment programmes and initiate discharge planning. To be highly skilled in assessing and interpreting a range of complex factors relating to the patients’ condition, including diagnosis and prognosis.
  • To liaise and establish communication networks with the multidisciplinary teams, external voluntary and statutory organisations as appropriate in planning for client’s treatment, discharge and resettlement.
  • To maintain the highest possible clinical and professional standards, abide by national guidelines and standards relevant to clinical caseload and to take into account current evidenced based practice.
  • To be a point of reference with regards to complex client cases within your defined specialised area of clinical expertise for the department and multidisciplinary team.
  • To undertake the measurement and evaluation of OT practice through the use of evidence based practice projects, audit and outcome measures, within Occupational Therapy and for the Multidisciplinary team.
  • To create an environment that promotes effective communication to patients, carers, colleagues and the multidisciplinary team by establishing effective communication networks and demonstrating skills in empathy, reassurance and the ability to motivate others.
  • To record statistics on activity in accordance with agreed departmental procedure and ensure the team are recording stats effectively.
  • To assist in the development of the Occupational Therapy Service across the Trust in conjunction with colleagues and managers.
  • To have a good knowledge of and to abide by the department’s and Trusts policies and procedures, and to comment and contribute to the development of these policies and procedures within the defined clinical area.
  • To be responsible for organising and planning a frequently fluctuating clinical workload. To remain flexible to provide cover at times of staff shortage and allocate work to occupational therapists, technicians and assistants as required.
