Job Description
Behavior Intervention Specialist
Candidates are invited to apply for the full-time Behavior Intervention Specialist position to work at our Extendicare Medex facility, a 193-bed long-term care home, located in Ottawa, Ontario.

Reporting to the Director of Care, the successful candidate will have the following responsibilities and qualifications:

  • The Behavior Intervention Specialist will work in a team environment provide behaviour planning and consultation services to the residents, their family / POA and the care team for persons with dementia, mental health disorders and / or substance usage challenges that display behavioural challenges.
  • The Behavior Intervention Specialistwill work in collaboration with all members of the care team within the organization as well as the residents’ family / POA and members of any external partners involved including involved Psychiatrists and members of their team.
  • The Behavior Intervention Specialist will develop one-on-one behavioural interventions to teach residents and / or care staff communication, social and resident skills with the purpose of reducing problematic behaviours in the home.
  • The Behavior Intervention Specialist functions within legislative requirements, regulations as well as the policies, procedures, mission, vision and values of the organization
  • Provide initial and on-going assessments in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team and external partners.
  • Create a behavioral definition of the priority behavior(s);
  • Develop an Individualized plan of care that considers the holistic needs of the resident, is directly related to assessment results, includes, goals and specific interventions to reach those goals.
  • Document ongoing evaluation of specific interventions and recommend program adaptations accordingly.
  • Provide information / education to all care staff involved to assist in effective implementation of the plan.
  • Provide information / training as needed to family / POA’s.
  • Keep abreast of current literature and research in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate from a recognized University in Psychology and,
  • Three (3) years’ direct experience working with persons with dementia, mental health disorders, substance usage challenges and their families / POA as an asset.
  • Knowledge of behavioral principles and interventions
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Understanding of medical terminology, particularly related to geriatrics and Mental Health
  • Experience implementing behavioural principles and interventions in the clinical environment (preference given to experience in a Long Term Care Home setting)
  • Excellent assessment and evaluative skills relating to persons with dementia, mental health disorders, substance usage challenges
  • Excellent conflict resolution, mediation, and problem solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills
  • High level of initiative and self-direction
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to work with Microsoft Office an asset
  • Strong professional ethics
  • Ability to provide training to care staff and families
  • Ability to translate relevant legislation into Agency language, policies and procedures
  • Ability to work with Mental Health Professionals, SLPs, OTs, to provide comprehensive services
  • Ability to work with Older Adults with dual-diagnosis
  • Ability to facilitate strong inter-departmental relationships
  • Ability to teach and transfer behavioral skills effectively
  • Ability to lead and coach others utilizing a collaborative and strengths-based approach
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work flexible hours
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information

Knowledge in the following areas are considered an asset:

  • Experience and understanding of non-pharmacological and therapeutic behavioral approaches f
  • Effective human relation skills and demonstrated commitment to working with seniors.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
  • Knowledge of Platforms that provide electronic documentation and development of care plans
  • Ability to include implementation of trauma informed practices

The Successful candidate will be required to provide a current Vulnerable Sector Check.

As a Behavioural Therapist Worker in a Long Term Care Home, your typical day will impact the following ways:

  • Provide sound clinical knowledge and skills, act as clinical expert and resource in the areas of how to meet resident needs that require Behavioural based Interventions.
  • Provide comprehensive, quality client/family centred health care services.
  • Collaborate with Social Servies Workers, Psychogeriatric Resource consultants and additional
  • Provide leadership and support.
  • Coach LTC home staff in the use of frameworks associated with identification and implementation of behaviour management strategies and develop behaviour care plans and approaches that assist in the provision of care to residents, meets residents’ unmet needs as well as reducing the risk of harm to self and / or others
  • Maintain a short-term active clinical caseload of older adults / residents presenting with or at risk for responsive behaviours that may be associated with complex mental health, substance use and/or other neurological conditions such as and not exclusive to Dementia.
  • Provide coaching on the development and implementation of behaviour care plans; guide appropriate care plan transitions.
  • Participate in weekly and as required resident care plan meetings.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned
