The North Simcoe Muskoka (NSM) Specialized Geriatric Services (SGS) Program is a regional program under the leadership of Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care. The NSM SGS program was established in 2016 to advance the care of frail older adults in the NSM region and their caregivers. With a mandate for leadership, clinical service, education and mentorship, research and ethics as well as advocacy, the program collaborates with a broad variety of partners from within and outside the NSM health system to improve patient outcomes, build capacity and foster system change.
The SGS Program is currently seeking a temporary part-time Behaviour Technician. The Behaviour Technician will provide assessment, and consultative services for clients experiencing behavioural challenges related to mental health and/or cognitive impairment and to participate as a member of a specialized geriatric mental health team.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Plans, implements/coordinates, evaluates, modifies and records therapeutic behavioural strategies in collaboration with client, and other service providers to meet client goals through supportive counseling, symptom management, health teaching and consultation.
  • Observes, communicates, and records client behaviours, ability to function, treatment and responses; reporting observations for assessment purposes; recommending program/service changes.
  • Provides interventions to support: socialization, self-care, leisure and coping skills, implementation of behavioural modification programs; and coaching and mentoring of family and other health care providers.
  • Completes bio-psychosocial and behavioural assessments including the selection, administration, scoring and interpretation of a variety of standardized research-based behavioural assessment tools
  • Prepares behavioural assessment reports on client for file and maintaining accurate clinical records according to established practices
  • Utilizes techniques such as crisis intervention, behaviour modification, social/cognitive skills training, person-centered language, and identification of client skills and strengths
  • Provides consultation services to clients, families and a variety of other healthcare professionals identified as SGS stakeholders in NSM community, retirement homes, and long term care home settings.
  • Participates in discussions/conferences concerning client status/progress/care/treatment/discharge planning; exchanging information, documenting in EHR; providing crisis intervention; monitoring the environment, reporting hazardous situations.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a recognized Behavioural Science Technology Diploma or Autism and Behavioural Science Graduate Program
  • Demonstrated knowledge of psychiatric diagnosis and disorders and theories of general and geriatric mental health theory and practice;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of behavior theory and management
  • Preference for recent & related experience working with seniors with cognitive impairment and responsive behaviours;
  • Experience with counselling techniques (e.g. supportive), life skills and health teaching techniques and symptom management in order to support the development, implementation, evaluation and modification of client goals and activities;
  • U-First! and Gentle Persuasion Approach (GPA) training preferred
  • Excellent therapeutic communication to interact with clients in a goal-oriented manner;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of crisis intervention techniques to manage and counsel clients and healthcare professionals during behavioral crises;
  • Strong analytical thinking skills to elicit and interpret information from clients to identify problems, evaluate information and draw conclusions when contributing to the developing care plan;
  • Results oriented work ethic to work independently and undertake tasks needed to accomplish work objectives and deliver quality, consistent and timely results
  • Demonstrated teamwork, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills; and a proven ability to adapt readily to change
  • Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values, and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude
  • Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills
