Escuela Avancemos Academy is a K-8 Public School Academy located in the heart of Southwest Detroit. JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the supervision of certified staff, perform a variety of instructional and clerical duties related to the English Language Development Program. The primary function of this position is to provide meaningful input for the students so that they will have successful grade-level experiences. Duties will require the ability to translate and interpret both written and oral communications in English and Spanish.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or obtain an associate’s degree (or higher); or meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment:
  • Knowledge of and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or
  • Knowledge of and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate
  • Experience in working with students in a school setting
  • Experience with the SIOP Model
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and speak Spanish and English fluently and, at an academic level
  • Submit to a criminal background check and be found without a record

Responsibilities:

  • Listens to and assists students in reading, spelling, mathematics, and all other subjects according to instructions and guidance from a teacher
  • Utilizes SIOP strategies that support identified ELL students
  • Assists with assessments in English and Spanish
  • Collects and assembles files
  • Distributes resource materials
  • Observe and record student performance as directed by the teacher or supervisor
  • Reviews a lesson in Spanish in order to provide meaningful input according to instructions from a teacher
  • Provides translation support, as needed
  • Performs related duties as requested
