Description:
The Biologist will lead a project building multi-scale habitat selection/occupancy models.
The position consists of desk-based work (data analysis, report writing) as well as travel and engagement with shareholders, project partners, and Indigenous communities. The Biologist must be an effective problem-solver, be capable of working in a small team, managing their own research, and managing their own time to meet project deliverables. The Biologist will work under the supervision of a Senior Biologist and Program Lead. There will also be opportunities to develop your own research ideas and analysis approaches that fall within the project scope.
ESSENTIAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related discipline
- Experience with data management, databases, working with GPS collar and camera data
- Demonstrated experience analyzing GPS and camera data in R, e.g., RSFs, SSFs, iSSAs, occupancy modelling
- Comfortable working with spatial data in ArcGIS and R, including mapping and analysis
- Able to analyze and report on complex ecological data sets
- Record of scientific writing including reports and peer reviewed publications (co-author acceptable)
- Demonstrated oral communication skills (presentations at conferences, technical meetings)
- Strong organizational skills
- Proven problem-solving skills and ability for independent decision-making
- Able to meet strict deadlines and willing to occasionally work outside of work hours
- Valid First Aid and CPR by start date
- Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence or other provincial/territorial equivalency, with a minimum of 3-years driving experience and can provide a current driver’s abstract that meets the requirements of our insurance provider
- Eligible to work in Canada (citizen, permanent resident, open valid work permit for the duration of the position)
DESIRABLE JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Familiarity with forest management practices and forestry data
- Lead author on peer-reviewed publication
- Experience working with diverse project partners including governments, NGOs and Indigenous communities.
Duration: 2.5-year term, with possibility of extension

Responsibilities:
- Coordinate a collaborative research project, under the supervision and mentorship of a Senior Biologist and Program Lead

- Work with fRI Research GIS Services and project partners to collate and integrate relevant spatial data into models
- Communicate results via peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, presentations at conferences and meetings
- Work with fRI Research Communications and GIS Services to produce additional communications products (e.g., story maps, infographics, webinars)
- Travel to meet with project partners, shareholders, and Indigenous communities to develop the research project and to regularly share research results
