Summary:

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation of a recognized program in Biomedical Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Valid BC Drivers License and access to a vehicle to travel with tools and equipment for work purposes.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Overall comprehension and knowledge of the operating and maintenance practices and procedures for medical devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and document work in accordance to standard operating procedures.
  • Current computer troubleshooting and networking knowledge, as well as understanding in the areas of cybersecurity and interfaces with electronic medical records.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate electronic test equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other related equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform factory-level repairs and performance verification of medical equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to address issues with critical thinking, analytical reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate respectfully with vendors, colleagues, hospital staff and equipment users at all times, particularly in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment to make decisions in high-stress environments, such as operating rooms and patient care areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, with minimal direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate professionally in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and in writing.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position, including walking/standing for long periods, lifting equipment (up to 25 kg), working with delicate instrumentation requiring manual dexterity and normal vision, with or without correction.

LMBME - WHO WE ARE:

Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering focuses primarily on health care technology management by providing a wide range of technical and engineering expertise. Under Providence Health Care, LMBME serves four health organizations in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia:

  • Fraser Health Authority (FHA)
  • Providence Health Care (PHC)
  • Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA)
  • Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)

LMBME acts as the technology resource and manages medical devices throughout their entire life cycle; starting from the planning for purchase and development of specifications stage, through the purchasing, implementation, maintenance, and finally, end of life and disposition stage. LMBME’s 190+ technologists support more than 100,000 medical devices spread across 27 major hospitals and additional sites such as correctional facilities, dialysis units, etc.
LMBME also plays a key role in technology management related to patient safety. It conducts medical equipment incident investigations, monitors medical equipment recalls and alerts, and identifies potential hazards with medical technology.

Responsibilities:

YOUR DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Equipment Maintenance and Repair: Working as part of an integrated team, performing corrective and preventative maintenance on a variety of biomedical and electronic equipment
  • Documentation and Records Management: Documenting activities and maintaining records, including service files, equipment service histories, demand and planned maintenance records, and tracking warranty programs. Informing clinical staff on the status of medical equipment inventory.
  • Technical Support and Training: Providing orientation and technical support to clinical staff, other hospital staff, and patients regarding medical technology. Preparing training materials, demonstrating procedures, and writing technical procedures for the operation of equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Medical Device Network Management: Participating in the implementation and maintenance of medical device networks and interfaces with electronic medical record systems. Troubleshooting technical issues, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and collaborating with clinical and IMITS staff for data management and sharing protocols.
  • Risk Management and Quality Improvement: Participating in risk management and quality improvement activities to enhance the safety of patients and staff. Responding to incidents involving medical technology, collecting information, documenting investigations, and providing input into recommendations to prevent recurrence. Identifying hazards and submitting hazard reports as needed.
