Description:

As a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist, you will be trained in all areas of Clinical Biochemistry: Automation, Biochemical Genetics, Newborn Screening and Toxicology.
The department is housed in a modern, purpose-built laboratory and the successful candidate will be joining a busy, friendly team. We currently have Beckman general chemistry and immunoassay analysers in our Automated Laboratory that will be linked to a DxA track later this year.
The Special and Manual Technique Labs have an array of state of the art equipment to provide our service.
The Blood Sciences laboratories have accreditation by UKAS under ISO 15189, and are currently in the process of extending that scope to include the newer equipment. We are approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for both the registration portfolio, leading to HCPC registration and specialist portfolios.
Severn Pathology’s aim is to provide a best in class, high quality, innovative, value for money pathology service that serves the needs of the healthcare market in the South West region. The laboratory facilities accommodate all pathology disciplines including the Blood Sciences, Bristol Genetics Laboratory, a single Bristol Cellular Pathology Service and a combined Microbiology and The UK Health Security Agency ( UKHSA ) within one facility.

The post holder under the direction of senior staff will be expected to:
Work as part of a team to provide a diagnostic laboratory service in Clinical Biochemistry in accordance with National, Trust and Departmental policies and procedures on a rotational basis in all sections (Automation, Biochemical Genetics, Newborn Screening and Toxicology.) of the laboratory
Participate in the training and development of other staff within the department
Participate fully in the department’s 24/7 rota system
Contribute to the development of services provided to meet the requirements of users.

Responsibilities:

Working in accordance with the Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and assist in the development and review of these as required.
Receiving and analysing samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
Assisting in the interpretation and technical validation of the analyses in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Responsible for the provision of our service to patients in routine and emergency situations.
Rotating into any area of the department as required.
Participating fully in the department’s 24/7 rota service.
Prioritising the completion of urgent requests.
Telephoning important results to an appropriate person when necessary
Responsible for their own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff
Validating and releasing results to service users as required
Maintaining a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate
Preparing and ensuring adequate supplies of reagents and consumables
Using consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies
Performing the routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment with which she/he is working including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions
Processing internal and external quality control samples as required
Participating in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual
Participating in risk management of the department including the reporting of adverse incidents
Assisting in research and development projects as required
Assisting in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLA’s, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required
Participating in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures
Undertaking continued professional development
Personally responsible for maintaining HCPC Registration
Participating in all other activities in the section to enable the department to maintain compliance with ISO15189 (2012 and 2022)
