SHIFT BAND 6 BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST, MICROBIOLOGY:

We are seeking proactive, motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Biomedical Scientist to work in the Microbiology section of the Infection Sciences Department at St Thomas’s Hospital in Central London. The successful candidate would be expected to hold HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist and have experience in microbiology. You would be expected to hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio (if HCPC registration was via IBMS portfolio route).
You will join a compressed rota, working an average of 37.5 hours per week. The shift pattern you will eventually join is a rolling 10 week rota which will include core hours, weekends and nights – however, you will also enjoy up to four consecutive rest days, allowing you extended time with family and friends!
The ISO15189 accredited Microbiology Department receives approximately 320,000 bacteriological specimens per year. The department currently uses the Epic Beaker and Q-Pulse. The Department also has a range of automation including the Bruker MALDI-TOF, Biomerieux Vitek, Becton Dickinson FX, Becton Dickinson MGiT and BDMAX, Sedimax Urine analyzer, DS2 and Cepheid GeneXpert system.
We test a wide range of microbiology tests ranging from routine to specialist services including breast milk screening and oral microbiology.
You will be joining a team of 5 Senior BMS and 28 BMS, 3 Associate Practitioners and 15 MLAs working over an 8am-8pm shift pattern. The post holder would be expected to join a team that works an average 37.5 hours/week over a 10 week period and be prepared to work as part of a shift rota that includes week days (09:00am to 18:00pm), Early (08:00am to 17:00pm), and Late (10:30am to 20:00pm), long day (8am-20:00pm) and nights (19:45pm-8:15am). Rest days are given after the nights.

At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. The post holder will be expected to work autonomously or as part of a team on a rotational basis in the diagnostic area of microbiology, taking responsibility to perform the work to the required standards, trouble shoot, train and supervise other BMS and MLA staff as required.
The diagnostic areas in each section are organized and managed by a Senior BMS. Staff rotate through the various sections of the discipline they are employed in at regular intervals with rotation through the main sections at more extended intervals in order to maintain up to date knowledge of current working practices within the diagnostic laboratory.
Technical;
To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations.
To follow the standard operating procedures and to participate in their regular review and update.
To undertake routine operative maintenance on laboratory instruments.
To undertake technical validation of the complex results from laboratory investigations ensuring accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols.
Scientific;
To undertake method and laboratory instrument evaluation as required
To participate in research and development as required.
Diagnostic;
To use interpretive skills to determine the pathogenic and clinical significance of results of laboratory tests, concentration and attention to detail are essential to these processes and form the greater part of the working day
