MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Leadership: Record of technical leadership including experience in leading teams or programs. Experience managing personnel, negotiating agreements, and building consensus among team members. A proven track record of attracting, mentoring, and retaining a creative and diverse workforce with a commitment to AA/EEO/Diversity/Inclusion/Belonging objectives.
  • Science: Excellent record of bioscience-related research and/or programmatic accomplishments in at least one of the group’s core capabilities, as evidenced by publications, citations, presentations, successfully winning grants, and/or leadership of long-term or well-funded projects.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Experience in developing collaborations, teamwork, building consensus, and effective communication with staff, sponsors, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Program Development and Sponsor Relations: Experience in program development and representing programs internally and externally to sponsors, stakeholders, and review boards. Knowledge of external funding agencies (DOE, DOD, DHS, Other government agencies, etc.) relevant to B Division, including experience and engagement with programmatic sponsors (programmatic interaction, strategy development, and/or change of station). Experience forming and maintaining industrial partnerships.
  • Experience effectively managing financial and human resources.
  • Experience implementing, enforcing, and providing clear guidance for institutional policies that affect research and development.
    Training/Certifications: This position requires a Q access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
    Education/Experience: Requires a bachelor’s degree in an area of biological sciences, or a related discipline, from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A PhD is preferred.

DESIRED SKILLS

  • Experience in managing or operating in the safety envelope of research facilities with biological and chemical hazards.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and in dealing with performance issues.
  • Background in Genomics or Bioinformatics
  • SCI or ability to obtain an SCI clearance
    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The Genomics and Bioanalytics group (B-GEN) and the Biochemistry and Biotechnology group (B-TEK) of Bioscience Division (B) are each seeking qualified applicants for the position of Deputy Group Leader (DGL). Bioscience Division is dynamic, intellectually rich, and collaborative with a broad portfolio of fundamental and applied research in biological science that focuses on biosecurity, energy security, and biotechnology development. The Division collaborates broadly with other LANL technical divisions in areas such as chemistry, earth science, materials science, and modeling, simulation and computational science. B-GEN houses significant capabilities in next generation sequencing, synthetic biology, and bioinformatics including molecular assay design, sequence analysis, and visual analytics. B-TEK oversees experimental capabilities in mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, flow cytometry, synthetic organic chemistry, microbiology, and cell biology.
The Deputy Group Leaders will be part of the Bioscience (B) Division management team and provide leadership in strategic direction and management oversight. B Division includes a multi-disciplinary, dynamic, and diverse set of experimental and computational scientists with an annual budget of >$70M. B Division serves the Nation by developing the science and technology needed to advance our knowledge of biological systems to address national level challenges in biosecurity and energy security. Research and development (R&D) includes addressing contemporary biothreats and preparing for future biorisks and threats (e.g., natural or engineered pathogens, environmental resources/sustainability, advanced biotechnologies).
The Deputy Group Leader will support the Group Leader in leading and managing the Group’s scientific, human resource, operational, and outreach activities. The successful candidate will be committed to scientific excellence and a diverse workforce, provide technical leadership for the Group, and represent the Group in division-level science and program planning. They will function as a key part of the division’s management team, sharing responsibility for the objectives and mission of Bioscience Division, including planning strategic directions and sound management practices. The successful candidate will foster a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment, ensure a safe and secure work environment, and nurture professional excellence. The Deputy Group Leader will report to the Group Leader of B-GEN/B-TEK and share leadership and management of the groups’ technical and programmatic activities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Foster high-performing, multidisciplinary teams and be able to effectively identify and deal with personnel issues.
  • Work closely with the group leader in areas of strategic workforce development, succession planning, recruiting, retention, and diversity of employees.
  • Contribute to the operational and technical excellence of the Group by providing oversight and coordination of programmatic work, security and safety systems, conduct of operations, and quality assurance.
  • Support group members in their everyday activities including, but not limited to complying with laboratory policies and regulations, preparation of proposals and project documentation, and performance management.
  • Work effectively with Laboratory line, program, and facility managers in strategic planning, program development, program execution, and capability development and maintenance.
  • Contribute to identifying, sustaining, and enhancing the facilities, infrastructure, and technology investments required to promote operational and technology sustainment for the Group.
