Description:

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

We are looking for someone with:

  • Strong technical skills for operating, managing, and maintaining all systems aboard a large marine research vessel.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a collaborative environment with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Proven work ability as a self-starter.
  • Effective leadership skills and ability to at times operate and command a 110-ft vessel and crew.
  • Experience performing arduous work during extended times at sea, sometimes during inclement weather.

Special Note:

  • US Coast Guard 100-ton Master’s License is required.
  • A valid driver’s License is required.
  • First Aid/CPR certification is required but may be obtained after selection at the expense of the department.
  • The incumbent will be required to travel and work on a vessel at sea frequently from spring through fall, for trip durations of up to three weeks (but typically about 7-10 days), sometimes during inclement weather.
  • Must have the physical capacity for arduous work and extended time at sea.
  • A U.S. Coast Guard Operator or Engineer license is desirable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of work experience:
1) as second-in-command or relief captain of a vessel of 46 feet in overall length or larger, OR
2) as captain of a vessel of 28 feet in overall length or larger, OR
3) performing complex repair and maintenance of marine engines, equipment and systems on vessels of 46 feet in overall length or larger.
The required experience is met by service as a Boat Officer II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Responsibilities:

The position is Chief Engineer and Second-in-Command of the department’s research vessel R/V Medeia, based in Juneau. This position is responsible for operation and maintenance of all vessel systems (e.g. engine room, electrical, hydraulic, plumbing, navigation, etc.) and keeping the vessel in safe and seaworthy condition.
