THINK is a non-profit organisation committed to advancing health and well-being for vulnerable communities both locally and globally. Our work spans three central domains: research, health systems strengthening, and capacity building. Our focus is on addressing a wider spectrum of critical health challenges which include Infectious Diseases, Mental Health, Gender disparities, and building resilient healthcare systems in the face of pandemics and climate change. THINK engages with the local community, government consortia, and international funders to provide care and carry out cutting-edge work that has contributed to making a difference both locally and globally.

THIS INTERNSHIP WILL BE LOCATED IN OUR HEAD OFFICE IN DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA AND IS OPEN FOR INTERNATIONAL FOREIGN STUDENTS, AS A COLLABORATION WITH EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES.

Job description:
We are seeking a highly motivated Business and Finance Intern to join our team at THINK’s HQ. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in running a non-profit organisation’s business and financial aspects while contributing to our mission of making a difference in Global Health. As an intern, you will work closely with our team, receiving guidance and support to develop your skills and knowledge in the field of business management.

Key responsibilities:

  • Financial Analysis: Assist in conducting financial analysis and data interpretation to support budget planning and financial decision-making.
  • Budget Management: Collaborate with the finance team to track and manage project budgets, ensuring compliance with donor requirements.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare financial reports and documents for internal and external stakeholders, donors, and government agencies.
  • Data Entry and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate financial records and databases, including expenses, invoices, and receipts.
  • Grant Management: Support the grant application and reporting process, ensuring all financial documentation is in order.
  • Expense Reconciliation: Assist in reconciling expenses, verifying receipts, and processing reimbursements.
  • Financial Compliance: Help ensure compliance with financial regulations, policies, and auditing standards.
  • Business Development Support: Contribute to business development efforts, including researching potential funding opportunities and preparing proposals.
  • Financial Training: Participate in training sessions related to financial and business operations to enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • Ad Hoc Tasks: Undertake other tasks and projects related to business and finance as directed by your supervisor.
  • Report Writing: Prepare research reports and publications for dissemination, contributing to our commitment to sharing knowledge and advancing global health.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in a relevant academic program (Business Administration, Global Development, International Finance, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Passion for global health and addressing infectious diseases.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

The internship is preferably a full-time position, but working hours can be adjusted to exam periods and other student jobs. It is an unpaid internship position, starting in August 2024 lasting for at least 5 months (subject to university agreement).
