POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Industry Partnerships & Commercialization (IP&C) office of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) champions the development and commercialization of SickKids innovations. To achieve this goal, we foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, we forge commercial partnerships and we help to build start-up companies.
Reporting to the Business Development & Alliance Manager, the successful candidate in this entry-level role will provide informed analysis, technology assessment and market research support to the Business Development team of the Industry Partnerships & Commercialization office at SickKids. The work includes, but is not limited to, obtaining invention disclosures from scientists, performing due diligence (scientific, intellectual property, market research) to develop and assess the potential of disclosed inventions, assisting with the development of business cases and outreach strategies for SickKids technologies and innovations.
The position offers an opportunity to be exposed to major areas of technology licensing, to work closely with leading scientists and Business Development Professionals, as well as the opportunity to evaluate commercial opportunities for SickKids’ technologies.

Responsibilities:

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL GET TO DO:

  • Identify new (potential) SickKids intellectual property by meeting with SickKids scientists and clinicians, reviewing primary research publications, attending internal scientific talks
  • Perform and summarize market intelligence studies and competitor analysis for new or active disclosures
  • Perform triage assessment, including prior art searches to assist with evaluation of intellectual property
  • Develop marketing materials for technologies/research in our portfolio (e.g. technology briefs, slide decks) and build industry networks for outreach and partnering purposes
  • Support management of the internal intellectual property management database (Inteum)
  • Assist in reviewing, drafting and negotiating the commercialization sections of various sponsored research and grant applications
