Under the supervision of the Chief Commercial Officer, the Business Development at the North Carolina Railroad (NCRR) leads the pursuit and delivery of revenue-generating projects. This role emphasizes industrial and business development, as well as project management, while supporting interdisciplinary teams, clients, and NCRR consultants. As a primary project manager focusing on revenue generation, the Business Development Manager aims to identify business opportunities and lead cross-functional teams to foster profitable growth and establish strategic advantages for NCRR. They will actively seek other business opportunities to boost revenue.
Requirements:

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to plan and manage work under time constraints, with limited direct supervision.
  • Enthusiasm for the company and its growth potential.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer-centered service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Excel or similar software.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Business, marketing, sales, or transportation-related degree from an accredited University.
  • Experience managing and delivering rail projects on time and within budget.
  • Experience with coordination, project management, or construction of rail assets for railroads.
  • Strong understanding of multi-disciplinary elements necessary for large-scale freight rail transportation projects.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Up to 30% overnight travel required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This work is conducted in an office setting and the field.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Responsibilities:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, execute, and oversee a business strategy prioritizing growth, positive customer service, and ease of doing business.
  • Maintain positive professional relationships with customers and clients.
  • Use financial techniques and identify best practices to improve company revenue.
  • Monitor sales progress to ensure that corporate goals are being met.
  • Support training for other internal development professionals.
  • Work with the Commercial and Economic Development Directors and their teams to conduct high-level industry research to develop effective sales solutions.
  • Promote NCRR’s products or services to prospective clients and customers.
  • Participate in collaborative business meetings to update key stakeholders.
  • Provide continuous, constructive feedback to cross-functional team members.
  • Review service and customer contracts to meet legal and corporate guidelines.
  • Interact with clients and respond to important inquiries about NCRR’s products or services.
  • Support multi-disciplinary design teams to ensure progress in NCRR project development.
  • Work with the Commercial Development Group to identify inbound and outbound product shipments within NCRR-controlled territory.
  • Gather and report competitive intelligence to NCRR’s commercial team.
  • Resolve customer issues with NS, CSX, and other short-line personnel to foster traffic growth.
  • Develop relationships and coordinate communication with key clients and stakeholders.
  • Track opportunities in NCRR’s Customer Relationship Management tool (CRM) to ensure closure and profitability.
  • Coordinate design project execution for continuity of purpose within scope, budget, and schedules, and liaise with outside agencies and officials for NCRR rail or development projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
