We are currently in search of a dedicated Cancer Support Worker to join our Chemotherapy Unit. In this pivotal role, you will adeptly manage both administrative tasks and clinical duties, playing a crucial role in providing comprehensive support to our patients throughout their treatment journey.

Your primary responsibilities will include assisting our nursing team in conducting Pre-Treatment Assessments and Holistic Needs Assessments, ensuring that each patient receives tailored care and support.

The Cancer support workers role is to develop and provide holistic needs assessments service for cancer patients and assist, support and co-ordinate the pathway for patients under the supervision of the Chemotherapy Team. A large part of the role will be to be responsible for providing administrative and coordinative support to patients, families, providing holistic needs assessments. Working under the supervision of the clinical nurse specialists.
You will provide clinical support to the Cancer Specialist Nurses within a clinical environment. Duties to include venepuncture, central venous device management. Performing investigations such as vital signs assessment, height and weight checks, Blood glucose monitoring and ECG’s. Collecting relevant samples such as bodily fluids.

Contribute to the assessment, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence based guidelines.
Understand that there will be frequent exposure to distressing/highly distressing situations and when to seek appropriate support/advice
Support and provide patient education and health promotion
Support patients with cancer and their families to access appropriate information and support, by sign-posting to a range of clinical and support services
Under supervision of the CNS deliver patient-centred, support and education as necessary to non-complex patients.
Arrange and book appropriate outpatient appointments.
Document and monitor all aspects of care coordination and service delivery, supporting data collection for audit and outcome data.
Plan straight forward tasks and work guided by SOP’s, protocols and procedures.
Deliver patient-centred, self-management support and education as necessary to non-complex patients, including how to self-assess
Encourage and support active and healthy lifestyle choices
Coach patients and carers to understand what signs, symptoms or situations to be aware of that would indicate concern, such as side effects of anti-cancer treatment.
Coach patients and carers on how to make contact when they feel that their condition or needs have changed, including what to do out of hours
Contribute to the management of risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
Identifying own development needs and agreeing development plans for these needs with supervisor
Ensure that confidentiality of patient records is strictly maintained
Participate in Trust and Directorate audits as required
Comply with all Health and Safety requirements within the trust
Proactively support and contribute to audit processes, governance, research, clinical research trials and service development
Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
Maintain and develop own professional competence and skills within scope of role
Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation
Demonstrate an awareness of the limits of own practice and knowledge and when to seek appropriate support/advice.
Communicate information with a high degree of empathy, understanding, diplomacy, honesty and integrity
