Responsibilities:

  1. Performs medication history collection for Emergency Department patients
    a. Utilizes all sources of information (i.e. Nextgen, Soarian, patient list) to create an accurate medication list.
    b. Interviews patients or patients’ family to verify accuracy of list.
    c. Calls patients’ pharmacies to verify accuracy of medications when necessary.
    d. Verifies or adds patients’ preferred pharmacy.
    e. Verifies or adds patients’ allergy information including reaction and severity of reaction.
  2. Oversees the medication distribution process for the Emergency Department.
    . Manages inventory and par levels of Emergency Department automated dispensing units.
    a. Replaces medications (including control drugs) to automated dispensing units. Informs charge nurse as well as pharmacist of all control drug inventory discrepancies assuring all discrepancies are resolved within 48 hours.
    b. Accurately performs daily C-II safe functions by pulling narcotics for automated dispensing units.
    c. Replaces and reconciles narcotic boxes for EMS services.
  3. Actively participates in quality improvement activities.
    . Collects and analyzes data accurately for projects and initiatives specific to the Emergency Department.
    a. Completes and documents medication storage area inspections on a monthly basis for the Emergency Department. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
    b. Ensures TJC medication management compliance in the Emergency Department.
  4. Prepares medication for dispensing under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, demonstrating accuracy, precision and consistency relating to selection, packaging and labeling functions.
    . Accurately prepares medications for dispensing from computer fill lists, medication labels or other request forms using accepted policies and procedures.
    a. Prepares sterile product according to approved procedures, documentation requirements and aseptic technique.
