Description:

Overview:
Oversee all educational, clinical, and research missions of the Department of Ophthalmology and serve as a liaison with EVMS, and EVMS MG administration, our Healthcare Partners, Community Faculty and relevant State Agencies as requested by Dean.
Responsibilities:

Provide leadership and administrative oversight of the Department’s education, research, and clinical programs and resources. Advance the research, clinical and education missions and leverage relationships and resources with both internal stakeholders and external partners. Promote the importance and impact of research and scholarly activities in the context of maintaining an active and impactful clinical enterprise. Seek ways to elevate the reputation of the Department and expand the clinical program in partnership with the Dean and the CEO of the EVMS Medical Group. Represent the Department within the School of Medicine and the institution broadly.

  • Manage finances and all personnel;
  • Oversee faculty recruitment;
  • Ensure quality education for all learners (Medical Students, Residents and Fellows in particular);
  • Oversee quality and scope of clinical enterprise including review of quality initiatives and development of new programs;
  • Serve on Board of Medical Group;
  • Ensure scholarly activity is moving forward for faculty and residents, and assist in faculty development, promotion and wellbeing;
  • Work in collaboration with Research Office, Dean and Faculty Affairs;
  • Represent the Department on key committees for School and with Health System;
  • Develop new Fellowship opportunities and maintain quality of current Fellowships as applicable;
  • Enhance reputation of Department with local, regional, and National partners and Government agencies: Ensure Departmental compliance with all Institutional policies and procedures.
  • Promote and support ground-breaking research, grants, publications and other scholarly activity while continuing to elevate the regional, national and international reputation of the Department
  • Establish Departmental policies with the Faculty that will assist in the achievement of Departmental goals, or develop a Departmental strategic plan, which includes goals that are supportive of the policies, mission, and strategic plan of the Eastern Virginia Medical School, including area-wide cooperation and regional program development.
  • Hold regular faculty meetings for full-time faculty and at least two meetings a year for all departmental faculty. While Medical School policy makes the Chair responsible for the Department, it also implies collegial Departmental decision-making.
  • Establish an effective mechanism for communication within the Department in order to discuss school policies and educational philosophy with all members of the Department.
  • Provide professional leadership and example in the Department.
  • Submit an annual report on Departmental activities to the President, Provost and Dean of the School of Medicine.

Qualifications:
Board Certified in Ophthalmology and appropriate specialty as relevant. Experience in a leadership role in academic medicine, preferable as a Division Chief or previous Chair of Ophthalmology. The new Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology will be a nationally recognized clinician-scientist with a distinguished career as a scholar, educator and clinician
