Chemical Technologist/Analyst – Physical Chemistry
This is an onsite, in-person position located at: 461 FRONT RD., Kingston, ON K7L 5A5, Canada
Celanese Polymer Products Canada Company needs a Technologist/Analyst at their Kingston, ON polymerization hub within Technology & Innovation (T&I) in the Celanese Engineered Polymers Division. The Chemical Technologist provides support to Scientists/Engineers by completing routine and non-routine sample analyses produced during experimental trials in pilot plants, process labs, and plant production areas. Kingston site executes polymerization/processing operations (e.g., autoclaves, compounding, extrusion, molding) and commonly used test procedures (physical, mechanical, heat ageing, chemical resistance) and analytical analyses for a variety of polymer chemistries.

This person will take on the role of Chemical Technologist in the analytical laboratories of the research organization focused on process and application development in the engineered materials sector. The individual will have the responsibility to support a variety of projects and provide accurate results to assist in moving the projects forward in a safe and efficient way and help the team to make informed decisions to meet timelines and milestones established through our business processes.
In this role, the successful candidate will work with the technical teams to conduct analytical analyses on samples from the experimental programs. These analyses are key to establishing basic data for scale-up and product development.

Skill Requirements

  • Ability to take initiative and exercise judgment in planning and executing work assignments.
  • Demonstrate strong desire to conduct oneself with “operational discipline” to ensure reproducibility of results.
  • Experience in nylon characterization and analyses is an asset.
  • Strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish networks through customers, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Outstanding safety awareness with enhanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to accept new challenges in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work with diverse teams.
  • Knowledgeable across range of polymer chemistries is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks with limited supervision and considerable time constraints.
  • Computer skills and the effective use of Microsoft Office products relating to data manipulation and report generation are required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team focused on analysis of sample streams from various R&D and manufacturing programs.
  • Quality control laboratory analysis to release products from the manufacturing process.
  • Conducts routine and non-routine lab experiments, reports experimental data to assist in conclusions and recommendations that meet the changing needs of customers and research programs.
  • A broad working and theoretical knowledge of various chemical and physical test protocols is required to manage analytical testing for raw materials, intermediates and finished products.
  • Specific focus on DSC, TGA, Instron, Rheology
  • Other testing such as Refractive Index, Particle Size Distribution, and pH measurements are an asset.
  • Method development on new sample streams will be required as needed.
  • Planning, organizing, and executing experiments in a team environment with guidance provided by a senior analyst, scientist and/or engineer.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills that include both operating parameters and experimental observations as well as sharing findings efficiently and effectively via verbal and written presentations.
  • As the work continually evolves, flexibility will be required in terms of willingness to take on different work and to be flexible in work schedules (e.g., some periods of shiftwork or holidays/weekends may be required)

Education

  • B.Sc. in Chemistry, Analytical or Environmental Science
  • Focus on physical characterization is an asset
