Mō te tūranga | About the Role
This is a key strategic leadership role that is responsible for defining and maintaining the Westpac New Zealand (WNZL) Compliance and Conduct Risk Programme. You will lead a team of compliance professionals to provide support and make recommendations to the Chief Risk Officer, WNZL Executive Team (ET) and the WNZL Board in respect of significant Compliance and Conduct Risk decisions.
You will work closely with business leaders to implement and influence the effective embedment of WNZL’s Compliance and Conduct Risk Management Frameworks and related policies, including prudential regulations, Privacy Compliance and ensure the timely escalation of material Compliance and Conduct Risks.In doing so you will ensure alignment with WNZL and Westpac Group strategy, policies and frameworks and risk appetite statements.
In this role you will provide independent advice and constructive challenge to the Business regarding their management of Compliance and Conduct Risks arising from both operational and change Initiatives. This includes having oversight of the design and Implementation of strategic and regulatory projects within the enterprise ensuring that Compliance and Conduct risks are well managed, and controls are appropriately designed, tested and implemented.

We are looking for an experienced Compliance Officer and seasoned people leader who brings a holistic and strategic approach with highly developed relationship management skills and a growth mind-set.
You will be passionate about influencing and fostering a culture of integrity and ethics within the risk function and partnering with the wider business to enhance enterprise-wide compliance culture ownership and effectiveness.
This will be a highly visible role, one which will support enhancing the compliance ‘brand’ within our organisation so a future -focused and strong influencer is required.
- Bachelor of Law degree (or equivalent) and have proven work experience in Senior Compliance or Risk roles in the Banking Industry, including in relation to privacy compliance.
- Additional experience in Financial Crime would be an advantage.
- Leadership and ability to influence, critical thinking skills.
- Capability and experience in the setting and designing strategy.
- Experience in management of enterprise change management programmes of work and delivering impactful outcomes.
- Specialist policy development and implementation capability.
- Working knowledge of key legislation, regulations and global best practices relating to Compliance and Conduct risk management, including prudential regulations and privacy laws.
- Presentation skills to Board level quality and proven Executive level stakeholder management experience.
- Commercial business acumen – pragmatically apply risk management in real world situations.
