Description:

Barcoo Shire Council is the local authority for the Barcoo Shire area. The Shire is a remote rural local government area located in Central Western Queensland and covers an expanse of 61,974 square kilometres (an area about the size of Tasmania). Barcoo Shire has a population of approximately 308 and incorporates the towns of Jundah, Windorah and Stonehenge.
This position will be based at Barcoo Shire’s Administration building in the township of Jundah.
Barcoo Shire is the gateway to Birdsville, Bedourie, Innamincka, Quilpie, Longreach and Winton. An historical fact of our rich history is the Barcoo Shire was the home to Magee’s Shanty, birthplace of the famous Bush Christening renowned by Banjo Paterson. Part of the beauty of our shire is you can experience our unique rustic landscapes, distinctive flora and fauna, spectacular wildlife, freshwater fishing, golf, bird watching and stunning sunsets. The Barcoo Shire Council was established in 1903, and provides municipal and rural services, is responsible for local planning and policy, fosters regional social and economic development and maintains a significant road construction and maintenance business.
Council is seeking an energetic and resourceful leader who is prepared to involve themselves in the community of Barcoo and work closely with elected members to drive strategic vision. They will lead the organisation into a sustainable future whilst maintaining a focus on continually improved council services and increased economic opportunity. The successful candidate will have strong fiscal management, commercial acumen, and governance ability, ideally gained in local government or a similar setting.
Council will be assessing the potential CEO’s ability to work as a conduit between the elected members and the organisation. The successful candidate will lead, motivate, and develop people through the creation of a high performing, responsible and accountable culture. This is an exciting role for an executive leader who is ready to embrace living in the outback, being part of the community and has a positive ‘can do’ attitude. You will be rewarded on many levels, both professional and personally.
