Professionals Australia is a contemporary and innovative union, representing the industrial and professional interests of over 20,000 professional employees across Australia. Their members include engineers, scientists, pharmacists, managers, IT professionals, translators and interpreters, and architects; professionals who make extraordinary contributions and strengthen our country’s economy, infrastructure and society. Professionals Australia advocates for their collective interests and helps navigate the political space and complex challenges.
Reporting to the Professionals Australia’s National Board, and leading national team of 80 staff, the Chief Executive Officer will provide visionary leadership and strategic direction to ensure Professional Australia’s members receive the recognition, respect, and reward they deserve. Building and maintaining effective relationships with diverse stakeholders will be paramount, including government and non-government agencies, internal teams, and industry sectors.
Credibility, integrity, strong relationships and collaboration will be essential, along with the ability to represent a broad cohort, advocate for the needs and interests of members, upholding the principles, values and ethos that underpin Professionals Australia. It is essential to build sustainable and respectful relationships with members through listening, connecting, learning and meaningful engagement, as well as the ongoing delivery of membership value including advisory, professional development, conferences, content, projects and opportunities for innovation, networking, mentoring and continuous learning.

To be successful, you will need proven experience in:

  • Board Governance, reporting, compliance, financial management and risk mitigation.
  • Leading advocacy, shaping public policy and engaging in political discourse to amplify members’ interests and drive positive change.
  • Driving recruitment and retention strategies to expand membership base, ensuring continued growth, while upholding union values and leveraging insights from for-purpose industry experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage, influence and unite diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop credibility with members, staff, and Board, serving as an enthusiastic advocate for their union and its members.
  • Influential leadership and development of a high-performing team to foster a culture of accountability and integrity.
  • Change management, continuous improvement and innovation, ensuring the organisation remains at the forefront of industry trends and best practices, plus delivery of projects including digital platforms.
