Description:

Driftpile Cree Nation (DCN) is a proud and culturally strong First Nation located between the towns of Slave Lake from the west, and High Prairie from the east, approximately 340 km northwest of Edmonton. The Nation is nestled on the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake. As the second-largest lake entirely within the Alberta boundaries Lesser Slave Lake is a stunning destination for birders and wildlife enthusiasts. We are signatory to Treaty 8 and a member of the Lesser Slave Lake Indian Council. As stewards of the land, we will ensure that the best sustainable practices are followed, now and in the future.
The DCN Chief Kinosew Lodge is community-based and family oriented to provide the care, protection and well-being of all DCN children in a preventative manner to promote the healing of all children, families and community. A coordinated, holistic, interdisciplinary approach is the foundation of the Program to meet the developmental needs of children, youth, and families with respect to the cultural identity, customs and traditions, beliefs and values.
Job Overview: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) reports to the Executive Director and is primarily responsible for the financial, administrative, risk management, and strategic operations of Chief Kinsoew Children’s Lodge as it relates to Finance. The incumbent will oversee all financial activities such as planning, reporting, budgets, and forecasts. The CFO will work with department Directors and the Executive Director to drive growth, financial accountability, transparency, and ensure stability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor or Master degree in finance or business administration or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • At least five (5) years experience as a CFO or senior financial executive.
  • Provide proof of good standing with CPA.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong understanding of financial management systems, accounting principles, and practices of budget preparation.
  • Strong leadership and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of First Nations people, values, and culture.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license, with clean driver abstract.
  • Fluency in Cree is considered an assist.
  • A Police Information Check & Child Intervention Record Check is required for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Take responsibility for cash flow management by overseeing the day-to-day accounting, reporting and internal controls activities of the Agency.
  • Work alongside department Directors and Managers to help set and implement organization objectives with consideration to department finances and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Provide strategic guidance to Directors and Managers regarding financial decisions and development of annual operating, capital and program budgets.
  • Lead and guide the development of financial policies, processes and internal controls.
  • Oversee the accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, analysis, and preparation of the consolidated financial statements.
  • Monitor and manage the influx of provincial and/or Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) funding, including grant compliance and reporting.
  • Providing accurate and true financial analysis statements including monthly balance sheets, income statements, cash flows statements, and actual budget.
  • Minimize risk and variances.
  • Research opportunities and/or external partnerships, and identify areas for cost reduction and process enhancement.
  • Facilitates financial discussions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely reporting of financial information to appropriate groups and stakeholders.
  • Ensuring policies and procedures are in compliance with professional standards, and provincial and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and mentor the finance team.
  • Facilitate and support the audit process.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources in the recruitment and performance management process.
  • Fully comply with all Driftpile Cree Nation and Chief Kinsoew Children’s Lodge policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required.
