DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

The University of Oregon Portland provides a range of academic and student support programs at its campus in Portland. Students at UO Portland are enrolled in professional master’s degree programs offered by the College of Design, College of Education, School of Journalism and Communication, and the Lundquist College of Business. Law students can complete their 3rd year of law school on the Portland campus, and a fifth-year undergraduate program is offered in Product Design. The Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health offers an undergraduate degree, a certificate program, and serves as the home for a robust research portfolio. There are also programs offering professional education and several research centers.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate/Assistant Vice President and Chief of Staff (AVP/COS) reports directly to the Vice President for UO Portland and is a member of UO Portland’s senior staff. The AVP/COS works as a strategic partner to the VP for UO Portland to ensure operations, internal and external communication, connections with the Portland region, strategic planning, and execution of initiatives are successful.
The AVP/COS serves as a key advisor to the VP and works with the VP’s team to provide innovative and creative solutions to execute goals and objectives. The AVP/COS will also represent UO Portland as a member of the Chiefs of Staff meeting in coordination and collaboration with other campus offices.
The AVP/COS oversees and coordinates projects and initiatives, ensuring that projects align with strategic goals and are executed successfully, and assists in resolving issues and challenges.
The AVP/COS serves as a proxy for the VP, providing avenues for easy connection to the office and representing the VP at meetings and events, as needed.
The AVP/COS serves as a liaison for projects within and outside the VP for UO Portland’s portfolio and helps facilitate communication and collaboration across different parts of the Portland campus and the university.
The AVP/COS role requires a firm understanding of public policy, higher education policy, government affairs, and community relations.
This role has considerable responsibility in representing leadership, recommending best practices, and building partnerships internal and external to UO Portland. This position is expected to have and exhibit diplomacy and excellent delegation and communication skills. In addition, the AVP/COS will work with the VP’s senior staff to set a professional and collegial tone and establish and reinforce a culture of service, respect, and collaboration in all manners of function responsibility.
The AVP/COS joins the VP’s senior staff’s efforts to enhance and advance equity, inclusion, and diversity across all portfolios.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of skills and experience.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience working in administration, project management, or related functions in a complex organization.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in relevant field.
  • Experience in higher education administration.
  • Supervisory experience.
