Providence Portland Medical Center is seeking a visionary Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join our leadership team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery. In this critical role, you’ll be responsible for driving operational excellence across our medical center and affiliated business lines.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Health or Hospital Administration, Business Administration or a related field required.
  • At least six years of senior level leadership experience in a health care delivery organization. The COO should have personal values compatible with those of Providence Health & Services and be comfortable leading and administering a Catholic sponsored organization as a healing ministry.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the current trends and change taking and implications to Providence Health & Services
  • Evident success in repositioning large organizations in a changing market.
  • Knowledge of the principles of change management and process improvement tools and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of managed care including capitation and contracting issues. Knowledge of the principles of continuous quality improvement.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Lead and inspire a high-performing team to achieve strategic goals and ensure smooth, efficient daily operations.
  • Partner with the CEO to translate Providence’s visionary plan into tangible action within the Portland market.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, fostering innovation and operational excellence to deliver exceptional patient care.
  • Oversee all aspects of hospital operations, ensuring efficient and cost-effective services that meet the evolving needs of patients, physicians, staff, and the community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides for the development and effective operation of assigned service lines and Portland Service Area, supervisors and evaluates the Service Area Directors, review strategic initiative and budgets, analyzes operation of cost effectiveness, and assures good patient care.
  • Provides direction for the development of short and long-term strategic initiatives for the stable growth and cost-effective operation of PPMC by providing leadership for hospital operations.
  • Participates actively in strategic planning and budgetary formation in conjunction with the Administrator, Finance Director, and site managers to ensure strong and focused operational and financial management of the acute care business.
  • Supports physician partners by knowing and understanding the medical staff issues and works with the physicians in order to provide an appropriate operational environment necessary for optimum physician practice. Coordinates medical direction, working closely with program directors of clinical programs to attain prescribed results. Participates as the administrative liaison on the Medical Staff Committees.
  • Responsible for coordination or support of regulatory agency compliance readiness and audit checks, as assigned by the administrator.
  • Organizes and leads Management Forum.
  • Responsible for various infrastructure functions.
  • Participates in routine employee communications forums to better inform site employees of relevant information concerning PPMC. Performs as a strong team leader for all Employee Relations activities.
  • Ensures the development of policies and programs that are economically feasible as well as being conducive to the personal and professional development of the PSA and hospital.
  • Interacts with and assists in shaping directions with the various key constituencies of PPMC patient and community, physicians, Providence Health System in Oregon, competitors, and payors.
  • Provides leadership and vision for PPMC so as to achieve improvement in value and service, flexibility and innovation of operations, integrated delivery, and partnership with Medical Staff.
  • Actively supports and incorporates the mission and core values into daily activities. Treats all others with respect and demonstrates excellence, justice and compassion in daily work and relationships with others.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, employees, and as appropriate, other information.
  • Demonstrates service excellence and positive interpersonal relations in dealing with others, including patients/families/members, employees, managers, medical staff, volunteers, and community members, so that productivity and positive relations are maximized.
  • Consistently demonstrates and incorporates principles of safety and infection control into daily activities as outlined in Environment of Care, Infection Control, and Exposure Control manuals and department safety policies/procedures. Consistently uses personal protective equipment as required and takes appropriate precautions whenever there is potential for contact with blood, body fluids, chemicals and/or other hazardous materials. Maintains knowledge of work-appropriate aspects of environment of care programs, complies with policies and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Develops individual objectives consistent with the Providence Health System’s Oregon Management System. Measures and reports on individual objectives quarterly.
