Description:

CMI - Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation (CMI) is an independent organisation that works to prevent and resolve conflicts through dialogue and mediation. CMI was founded in 2000 by Nobel Peace Laureate and former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari. CMI has since grown to be a leader in the field of international peacemaking with annual budget of over 15 million euros and close to 100 personnel working in different capacities. CMI has headquarters in Helsinki, and office in Brussels and has active engagement in over 20 other locations globally. CMI became a Foundation in 2021.
CMI is now seeking a Chief Programme Officer (CPO) for a fixed-term period until March 2027 to ensure its programmatic work delivers positive impact in line with the Foundation’s mission and contribute to the execution of CMI’s Strategy 2030.
The CPO leads overall programming across the four geographic teams - Eurasia, Sub Saharan Africa, MENA and Asia - and the two thematic priorities - Women in Peacemaking and Digital Peacemaking. The CPO reports to CEO and is a member of CMI Leadership Team.
Key responsibilities:
Leading the development of the CMI programmatic work and ensuring that its implementation reaches strategic targets;
Serving as supervisor to five Heads of programmatic teams and one Senior Manager;
Participating in the work of CMI Leadership Team and giving input to management of the organization;
Leading selected regional and other emerging initiatives;
Fostering new projects and fundraising as well as contributing to international policy discussions.
A successful candidate is expected to:
Have at least ten (10) years of practical experience in the field of conflict resolution, mediation and dialogue, of which at least five years (5) in a leadership position;
Have proven track record in international peace mediation and political processes;
Have a deep understanding and knowledge of at least one relevant region, its dynamics and politics, relevant peace processes and diplomatic efforts;
Have excellent leadership, people management and team working skills;
Have relevant networks in the field of mediation, and strong skills in building relationships as well as fundraising;
Have demonstrated ability to work under pressure in challenging circumstances and to tight timelines;
Have strong communication skills and willingness to represent CMI’s work in media;
Have language and presentation skills in English, other languages are an asset;
Have strong analytical and writing skills as well as excellent IT skills;
Have a university degree from a relevant field, advanced degree is an asset;

The Chief Programme Officer reports to the CEO. This position is fixed term until 15 March 2027. The preferred starting date is as soon as possible. The position is located in Helsinki and requires a work permit to work in the EU. Frequent travel is required, including sometimes high-risk destinations. CMI’s main working language is English.
