The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. In addition, the ACPS develops criminal law policy for the province and supports criminal law consultation with other levels of government.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your background includes extensive related senior management and criminal law experience:

  • Minimum of 15+ years of senior assessed legal experience;
  • Minimum of 5+ years in a senior management role;
  • Budget and financial planning experience; and
  • Human resources experience.

Exceptional issues management, communication and relationship building skills are critical for working collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders. Your demonstrated skills in systems thinking, strategic business planning, and resource management will set a course for the success of the Northern Regional Prosecution Offices.
A law degree and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta is required.
Thorough understanding of relevant legislation, working understanding of project management and change management practices and principles will also support your success in this role.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), ACPS, Criminal Justice Division, and operating within the legislative, policy and budgetary framework governing the criminal justice system in Alberta, the Chief Prosecutor, Regional (North) will provide direction and leadership on all matters relating to the administration of criminal justice in regional areas including Fort McMurray, Edmonton Rural & Regional Response Office, Grande Prairie, Peace River, St. Paul, Fort Saskatchewan and Slave Lake. Administering criminal justice in the province is the constitutional responsibility of Alberta and is essential to the rule of law.
In this role, you will ensure adequate professional and support staffing of the Northern Regional Crown Prosecution Offices, employee relations, performance management, administration of discretionary rewards and benefits, and staff development. Leading and mentoring a team of senior prosecutors you will promote standardized application of policy and legislation. Your innovative recommendations will influence changes to policies and procedures impacting initiatives department wide.
Fostering a collaborative approach to the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases, you will build linkages across government, with police and other stakeholders. You will act as a liaison and ensure there is integration of systems with police and investigative agencies, the courts, other divisions within Alberta Justice, other departments of the Government of Alberta, and community groups and agencies. You will also participate in law reform activities, providing legal advice, communication support and strategy. Contributing as a member of the senior management team and providing sound advice to the ADM will be key to the achievement of corporate goals.
