POSITION DESCRIPTION

Welcome to the wonderful world of Child and Family-Centred Care!
Working closely with the Senior Manager, Child and Family-Centred Care and Health Equity and other Family Centre staff and volunteers, you will provide a child-centred environment, focusing on the literacy needs of patients and families in both the inpatient and outpatient environment. You will provide readers advisory services to children and families, develop and maintain a collection for all ages, and work with library vendors and suppliers. You will plan, organize, and implement library programs for pre-school, elementary, and young adult library users. You will also collaborate with staff and patients and families to enhance usage of the library and increase access to the children’s library for all patients and their families.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote literacy through implementation of literacy programs and activities for children and develop partnerships with community agencies to maintain and enhance reading while children are hospitalized
  • Maintain collections, monitor automatic and continuous order plans, monitor trends in children’s and youth publishing
  • Create and maintain bibliographic and holding records found in the library system
  • Collaboratively work with Child Life and other inter-professional staff for programming, Story Time, and CCTV programs, both in Family Centre and in other Family Spaces
  • Coordinate and host televised programming for admitted patients
  • Work with the SickKids Foundation to communicate library needs to donors and evaluate appropriateness of donations and collections as they are provided to the Family Centre
  • Advocate for diversity and inclusion and cultural heritage and awareness through the collection of non -English language books, resources, and library materials
  • Be an educator and leader of lifelong learning: provide training and leadership to Women’s Auxiliary Volunteers, library students, and other volunteers
  • Attend and collaborate with professional library organizations to be informed of the needs of children and youth and their preferences to provide appropriate information and resources
  • Participate in hospital-wide committees to represent Family Centre when opportunities arise
