ABOUT US

Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) is the Victorian Government’s insurer and risk adviser, covering the people and projects that help Victorians thrive.
We’re an agency in the Department of Treasury and Finance portfolio, established under the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority Act, and report to the Assistant Treasurer.
We provide insurance and risk advice to government departments and agencies, with more than 4,600 clients, ranging from small community service organisations to public hospitals, schools, and core service providers. We also provide domestic building insurance to builders, giving Victorian homeowners peace of mind for building projects valued over $16,000.
We help our clients prepare for, prevent, or reduce the impact of harm. When things don’t go to plan, we help clients restore services and recover quickly.
Our unique perspective across Victorian Government clients is an opportunity for learning and development in the risk and insurance industry as well as the broader public sector, creating deep connections with our clients, and a shared understanding of best practice in our fields of expertise.

Responsibilities:

YOUR ROLE

Our Liability Claims Team is growing, and we have two unique opportunities for Claims Specialists to play a pivotal role in ensuring a positive and seamless resolution experience for our clients.
As a Claims Specialist, you are responsible for managing a discrete portfolio of claims (which includes managing abuse claims) that delivers client-focused solutions that build a more resilient Victoria.
You work with a team of claims specialists and claims officers who provide best-practice strategic claims management. VMIA claims management is tailored to the public sector and focuses on efficient, fit-for-purpose recovery solutions for our clients.
The Claims Specialist also plays a key part in educating our clients and building their knowledge of emerging trends and strategies aimed at reducing the level and frequency of claims to heighten their risk management capability.
This role reports to the Liability Claims Portfolio Manager and sits within the Risk, Insurance, and Claims Solutions Division.

WHAT YOU DO

  • You effectively manage your own portfolio of claims. You interpret and apply policy coverage. You establish reserves and review them throughout the life of the claim to ensure accuracy. You assess and quantify claims costs. You negotiate settlement outcomes and identify recovery prospects.
  • You build effective relationships with key legal advisors and/or insurance providers to achieve optimum claims resolution.
  • You work in partnership with appointed legal service providers in all aspects of negotiation, mediation, and litigation or order to manage liabilities and resolve claims in consultation with VMIA clients.
  • You act quickly and efficiently to ensure indemnified claims are resolved.
  • You raise reserves and settle claims within your delegated authority, comply with the processes set out in the Claims Management Manual, and escalate matters as appropriate.
  • You build and maintain effective relationships with clients that maximise the client claims experience. You influence and collaborate with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • You actively participate in mediations and other formal and informal settlement forums and lead settlement discussions.
  • You contribute to the innovation and development of products, appropriate coverage, and claims response by identifying trends within the portfolio and work with Underwriters and Risk Advisors to optimise the risk.
  • You participate in various activities identified as contributing to VMIA’s value proposition.
