The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, (UTK) Human Resources office is seeking a full-time Compensation Specialist. The UTK Human Resources Office provides services to more than 5,000 regular faculty and staff, as well as temporary and student employees. Here is our list of required education & experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Broad human resources experience, typically gained through three years’ work within a human resources office. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, candidates who have an additional two years of human resources experience will be considered.
  • Experience providing consultative and advisory services to partners outside of HR on HR matters with the goal of problem solving and creating positive solutions in a customer focused environment.
  • Experience drawing conclusions, making decisions and effectively communicating them.

While not required experience, we have some preferences for education & experience:

  • PHR, SHRM-CP or CCP
  • Experience in a compensation and/or classification role.
  • Experience with HRIS systems.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience with merit/market-based compensation systems.

And with our required and preferred experience, we also have our Knowledge, Skills and Abilities you need to bring with you:

  • Knowledge of human resources practices, principles and applicable federal/state laws/regulations governing employment.
  • Knowledge of merit/market-based compensation structures.
  • Knowledge of job classification process.
  • Computer skills, including word processing, HRIS, Excel spreadsheet and database skills. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to perform research, draw conclusions, and offer effective recommendations.
  • Ability to work with a variety of different audiences and provide excellent customer service.

What is a day in the life of a Compensation Specialist? Well, if you are in this role, you facilitate compensation and classification related activities in support of institutional goals and objectives. This position is responsible for classification of positions, compensation analysis and recommendations, providing consultative and advisory services to university community, and participating in, and completing related projects including developing and delivering training.
