Description:
Applications are invited for the posts of Emergency Medicine – SEM/MSK Fellow at the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a fixed-term post until the end of August 2025 with the option to extend for a further year. Applicants must have full registration with the GMC.
This post is designed for a Higher Specialist Trainee in Emergency Medicine to develop their skills in MSK and Sports Medicine as an OOPT. Applications from post-CCT trainees will also be considered. The MSK Fellow will contribute to the Emergency Department middle-grade rota for 50% of their contracted time. The other 50% of the time will be spent in various MSK/Sports Medicine environments.
There will also be an opportunity to shadow a doctor working within a sporting environment and gain experience in immediate care at sporting events.
The post holder will be encouraged to gain a qualification in immediate care in sport and time will be allocated for this. The post holder will also be supported if they wish to undertake a post-graduate diploma/master’s in sports medicine; again, time will be allocated for this.
The primary function of the Emergency Department is to organise the reception, assessment and immediate management of patients presenting to the unit. The successful applicant would be expected to provide clinical support at the middle-grade level and to supervise members of the junior medical staff.

Working in the Emergency Department at middle grade level
There will be the opportunity to participate in departmental teaching, quality & safety and quality improvement projects. Participation in a local or national audit is expected.
A study budget of £500 will be available for relevant courses, conferences and qualifications
20% of clinical time can be spent in an area of interest ie Paediatrics, Simulation, Teaching or Quality Improvement.
Subject to individual negotiation, there will be the opportunity to take up to 2 months of unpaid leave during the year to pursue individual interests. This is in addition to annual and study leave.

We have two main hospital sites: Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke’s Hospital. Maternity Services are centralised at the maternity unit on the Bradford Royal Infirmary site which includes our neonatal unit. The main theatres and emergency admissions are located at Bradford Royal Infirmary while St Luke’s Hospital provides a large outpatient facility and wards for therapy and rehabilitation. In 2021/22 our Trust services delivered 5,525 babies, performed 13,102 operations in theatre and handled 423,154 outpatient appointments. We had 108,503 attendances at our Emergency Department.
This post is designed for a Higher Specialist Trainee (or equivalent) in Emergency Medicine to:
Learn about musculoskeletal medicine and apply it to their practice within the ED.
Shadow a doctor working within a sporting environment and gain experience of immediate care at sporting events
Allow time to gain qualifications in Sports Medicine and Immediate Care in Spor
Applications from post-CCT trainees will also be considered. The job will allow the successful candidate to undertake focussed training in MSK Medicine and Sports Medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to the Emergency Department middle-grade rota for 50% of their contracted time. The other 50% of the time will be spent in MSK clinics within the BRI and in various sporting environments.
The trainee will be supported and encouraged to gain a recognised post-graduate Sports Medicine qualification. The trainee will also be expected to attend a sports-related pre-hospital immediate care course during the year.
The successful applicant’s main role in the Emergency Department is to provide clinical work at the middle grade level and to continuously supervise members of the junior medical staff (as outlined in the job plan)
