Description:

To be a expert clinical practitioner in nursing practise- with the ability to demonstrate skill in the provision of care for patients with Ventilation/Respiratory care needs, displaying Clinical competence. Participate in the management of patient care by providing hands on 1:1 teaching sessions at the patients bedside, to enable junior/less experienced staff to develop their skills Be responsible for own personal learning and practise development, ensuring NMC proficiencies are maintained and up to date practise is being delivered in accordance with Trust guidelines and government initiatives. Participate in clinical audit and research to ensure current practise is effective and enables the Ventilation Inpatient centre to deliver the highest standard of efficient and effective care. Be visible on the unit and able to make themselves readily available to assist and support staff members with any learning/development issues.
Promote an effective environment conducive to learning and development, encouraging clinical supervision and reflective practise. Assist and support newly qualified/ International recruits with the transition into the clinical environment. Develop training and action plans for underperforming staff members. This will also include reviewing existing action plans and liaising with senior Nurse leaders to take appropriate steps to ensuring staff members have the support guidance they require.
Liase with other education resource initiatives for example: simulation suite and provide regular education sessions. Assist the clinical team in producing Respiratory/Ventilation specific competencies. Work collaboratively with the Nursing team to identify areas of educational need, prioritise these areas in the development of an educational programme implementing best practise. Assist in the completion of a training needs analysis to help staff identify gaps in knowledge and skill.
Implement a comprehensive development programme for new starters/ preceptors to give structure to learning and development within the clinical area- promoting specific modules of learning that should be undertaken to enhance and develop the staff member at trigger points throughout their career on the Ventilation inpatient centre. Support Nurse Mangers with ensuring mandatory training and medical device competencies are completed and staff members are confident with all medical equipment used in the clinical area. To ensure Clinical staff within the Ventilation Inpatient Centre/ Respiratory meet CQC/LQA and peer review training requirements. Benchmark nursing practise to ensure all staff members are following the Trusts policies and procedures to deliver a high standard of care.
Develop a resource bank/library- holding Ventilation/Respiratory specific evidence- based practise can be found. Highlighting websites which display best practise. Maintain accurate up to date records of training, highlighting dates of re-assessment/competency re-assessments. Act as a professional role model who leads by example in regard to attitudes, conduct and appearance.
Develop inter-professional collaboration, and work in partnership with other departments/teams. Provide clinical and professional advice and support to ward-based teams as required. Comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations to provide a safe environment for the patients, their families and members of the staff. Have an in-depth knowledge of relevant national and local health policy issues and their implications to the service.
Providing comprehensive and constructive feedback / criticism where required, and escalating concerns to the ward manager/ matron as required. Offer support and leadership to ward/ department managers in all aspects of education and capability and performance. Assist in the writing of policies, procedures and guidelines in relation to education. To operate within the agreed financial targets and work to improve financial management.
Develop and maintain highly effective communication networks with key stakeholders (Heads of Nursing, Matrons, Sisters, Charge Nurses, Clinical Educators and Mentors) to support and ensure development of professional behaviours and a range of knowledge and skills for all staff. To attend forums and meetings as required. Maintains professional registration and practice through CPD. Demonstrates the ability to allocate, coordinate, monitor and assess own workload.
Develop partnership working with the HEIs, contributing to the education of students. To provide extensive clinical advice and support to enhance the knowledge base and practical skills of staff who look after medical and surgical patients. Evaluate clinical practice within areas of responsibility, through audit. Contribute to research in nursing practice and support colleagues in capability building to participate in research and develop critical appraisal skills.
Through the use of audit and research and the dissemination of key findings, promote health education. Present findings of audit and research at multidisciplinary meetings Disseminate results/research finding via local team and/or national/international and publications. Promote the shared objectives of the multi-disciplinary team by working closely to ensure that best practice is achieved utilising Clinical Benchmarking to support this
