Responsibilities:

The MHDA Clinical Nurse Educator’s (CNE) primary role will be in the Mental Health inpatient units and the Mental Health Emergency Consultation Service (MHECS) at the WWRRH; secondly the role will support the orientation, learning and development of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing staff across the MHDA service.
The CNE will work under the direct line management of the MHDA Director of Nursing and in collaboration with the Co-ordinator Workforce Development, the Coordinator of Consumer Participation, the Nurse Unit Managers (NUM) and the Clinical Nurse Consultants (CNCs) to develop and implement clinical education programs relevant to mental health nursing capabilities that reflect the recovery and trauma informed care principles. The CNE is also accountable to the Nursing and Midwifery Directorate who will provide guidance on nursing educational priorities, and professional support and guidance for the CNE within the MLHD through structured development programs and targeted education.
The CNE will provide educational support which is essential in ensuring frontline mental health clinicians have appropriate knowledge, skills and support to enable them to contribute to continuous improvement, enhancing clinical practice for the delivery of safe quality patient care. Where possible, the CNE will collaborate with the Coordinator of Consumer Participation to involve consumers in the development and delivery of education and training particularly in relation to the consumer experience of recovery and using public mental health services from a consumer perspective. Similar collaboration may occur with the Coordinator Family Friendly Mental Health strategy with respect to carer involvement in training, where relevant. The provision of education encompasses a range of education activities including promoting, educating, mentoring, clinically supervising and supporting the mental health workforce who are caring for their consumers. The CNE will work alongside their colleagues including the peer workforce to provide point of care education and clinical support.
Education will also include orientation and mentoring for undergraduate students on clinical placement, transitioning graduate nurses and new staff, as well as meeting the ongoing educational needs of existing nursing staff.
