An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Innovation & Tritech department as a Clinical Scientist. Innovation & Tritech aims to identify new, unmet clinical needs and translate these into innovative medical technologies to benefit patients, staff and the wider health economy. The team has detailed knowledge of the UK’s regulatory requirements and aims to help bring innovative products and ideas to market.
This fixed term (12 months) part time role (15 hours per week) health board-wide and externally facing post will be a key member of the team and will be expected to work without supervision. They will be responsible for helping to deliver and manage a wide range of highly complex novel medical devices and more general innovations projects.
This post is based at the Tritech Institute, Dura Park, Bynea, Llanelli.
The post holder will be required to carry out a range of assigned tasks and responsibilities that will support the Head of Innovation & Tritech. The post holder will take charge of project management, delegating duties to junior staff, as appropriate. This will involve adapting to the needs and requirements within the department to promote and support its ideals and targets. They will be expected to deputise for the leads of the Innovation and Tritech department attending meetings, interviews and undertaking research, development, audit, incident investigation and policy review in their absence. The post holder may on occasions be required to work within other areas of the Directorate.
The post holder will cover all medical disciplines and work with universities and industry partners. Their primary responsibility will be in ensuring timely project delivery of projects ensuring the ‘hitting of income generation and clinical investigation research recruitment targets’. They will manage technical complex cases, including clinical trials on novel / innovative medical devices. This will include making decisions on service provision, making judgements involving complex facts or situations, which require analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options.
Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 11,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:
Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;
Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;
48 general practices (four of which are managed practices), 47 dental practices (including three orthodontic), 99 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres;
Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;
Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
The post holder will monitor and provide advice to the Innovation and Tritech leads of actual or potential problems with regard to development work and technical tasks, provide strategies to resolve these issues, taking an active role in delivering these strategies. They will be responsible for the administration of complex technical information in accordance with the departments ISO 13485 quality management system (QMS). In addition, the post holder will ensure that any personal and professional development plans reflect the requirements of ISO 13485 and the Academy of Health Science.
The post holder will be responsible for organising their own workload and supervising the workload of junior clinical technologists, student clinical technologists and other technical staff. Success will be measured by number of new investigators, number of new collaborations and grant income.
