About the role:
Part-time (minimum one day a week) clinical teachers are required to teach in Primary Care General Dentistry for Outreach that delivers all aspects of primary care dentistry to adult and adolescent patients attending student clinics.
This post would be ideally suited to an experienced or a specialist dental practitioner with an interest in the education of dental students. A major aspect of the posts is to provide clinical teaching and support for the training of BDS undergraduate students. Clinical teachers will also be expected to deliver seminars and possibly lectures, assess students and provide feedback on their performance. Support will be provided if needed.
This post will be based at: West Norwood Site Outreach Clinic at the West Norwood Health & Leisure Centre.
Primary Care General Dentistry
Applicants should be experienced and fully GDC Registered Dentists. An appropriate honorary clinical contract will be requested from the appropriate NHS Trust and the successful applicant will be expected to take part in all aspects of clinical governance activities.
Applicants from a general practice environment are encouraged and the Faculty also values postgraduate qualifications, employing specialist clinical teachers in a range of specialities.
To undertake clinical teaching as directed by the Head of Department/Team/Unit.
Be responsible for the teaching, assessment, feedback, monitoring, and progress of, undergraduate and dental care professional students, under your nominated supervision, in clinical practice relevant to the Department. The teaching may include seminars, tutorials, lectures, clinical skills teaching and clinical teaching with patients.
Contribute to setting and marking assessments, and curriculum development as necessary
Engagement with the electronic student feedback and assessment tool used by the Faculty after every teaching/clinical session
Clinical teachers should work and plan care at a suitable level for undergraduate teaching. Where additional support is required, this should be discussed with the relevant Head of Department. Decisions made at consultant level must be accepted or discussed with the relevant consultant. Decisions made at that level must not be changed without the expressed consent of the consultant.
The clinical teacher will be part of a team providing clinical teaching and patient care. The team will comprise of other clinical teachers in the Department and other dental care professionals (such as dental nurses under the guidance of a senior dental nurse). Clinical teachers are expected to support other clinical teachers and team members and work effectively together.
To network and communicate effectively with other clinical teachers within the department and other staff of the Department and other departments with whom students and patients may require direct contact
Be responsible for the clinical care and safety of the patients being treated by students
At times when students are not in attendance clinical teachers may be asked to assist in the service provision of the Department as directed by the Head of Department. Alternate teaching duties, or role, may be expected at such times to ensure the effective running of the Department. Transfer to other Departments at this time may be appropriate to ensure effective provision of patient care and student teaching.
Participate in clinical and other service activities as requested by Head of Department or approved individual
Attendance at Teacher Education and Inset training days
Comply with NHS Trust mandatory training and comply with NHS Trust policies
To ensure students follow the clinical governance regulations and operating practice of the relevant NHS Foundation Trust
Ensure that information of a confidential nature is kept strictly confidential.
Clinical teachers will be expected to undergo formal induction processes of both King’s College London and the relevant NHS Foundation Trust. King’s College London as the main employer offers courses and further training opportunities related to the role of Clinical Teacher. Attendance at such courses must be agreed with the Head of Department.
This is a part time post, and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

Desirable Criteria

• MSc or similar in a relevant clinical discipline
