PRIMARY DETAIL

  • Salary Package: From $104,726 to $113,545 (HEW level 7), plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Appointment Type: Full time, continuing contract
  • 35 hour working week with opportunities for flexible working arrangements
  • Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde) location

Responsibilities:

We are seeking and talented, motivated and experienced finance specialist for this newly created role in our Clinical Trial Units (CTU) at Macquarie University. As the Finance Team Leader you will oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the CTU, lead the implementation of process improvement to enhance quality, contribute to the strategic decision making of the unit by providing insightful financial reporting and providing effective coaching, mentoring and development to a dedicated team of financial analysts.
Working in fast paced and dynamic environment and reporting to the Clinical Trial Finance Manager, you will be responsible for:

Clinical Trial Finance Operational Oversight and Support

  • Operational Leadership: Oversee day-to-day financial activities, ensuring accuracy and efficiency and review and drive improvement to processes including accounts payable, accounts receivable, expenditure, revenue, month end and year end close activities, yearly budget and variance analyses etc.
  • Process Enhancement: Collaborate to streamline processes, reducing complexity and enhancing efficiency.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Prepare comprehensive reports and analysis to support informed decision making
  • Budget and Cost Oversight: Review staff cost allocations and analyse trial types for effective resource allocation to trial budgets and accounts. Ensure CTU budget is on track and provide variance analysis and rectification as needed.
  • Compliance Management: Ensure adherence to finance and university policies, preparing for audits and overseeing documentation for all vendors / licence agreements / renewals for the CTU.
  • Sustainability and Viability: Monitor trial financial health, supporting long-term cost effectiveness.
  • Workload Distribution: Manage workloads for increasing complexity while maintaining excellence.

People Management

  • Staff Development: Provide coaching, mentorship and guidance to the team and help them to set and develop meaningful development and career goals to enhance skills and navigate professional challenges
  • Managing Performance: Effectively manage individual and team performance to deliver clinical trial objectives and create an environment that motivates team members to perform at their best
  • Goal Setting: Assist team members in setting clear and achievable performance goals that align with their aspirations and contribute to overall team and organisational objectives.
  • Skills Development: Identify training, learning and development opportunities that enable team members to acquire new skills and competencies to enhance their capabilities
  • Feedback Facilitation: Promote a culture of constructive feedback by encouraging open dialogue, facilitating feedback sessions, and fostering a safe environment for communication.
  • Recognition and Appreciation: Ensure individual and team achievements are recognised and celebrated and foster a positive and motivated work environment

Stakeholder Relationships

  • Stakeholder management: Develop and foster relationships with Sponsors and Clinical Research Organisations as well as CTU vendors (e.g. MUH Pharmacy, MQ Health and MMI etc) to optimise CTU work processes, efficiency, and finance metrics.

About You
As a degree qualified and experienced team leader in a finance function, you will have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the proven ability to motivate and inspire a team of finance professionals to perform at their best. You will be comfortable with process improvement and implementing changes to best support the effective delivery of financial services.
You will possess experience across a broad range of financial and accounting processes such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, budgeting, and analysing and reporting. You will have a strong track record of providing considered and accurate financial advice, guidance and support to a business unit and possess a track record in high quality month end close processes and the preparation of comprehensive financial statements.
You will have an inquisitive mindset and enjoy fostering a positive and collaborative team environment. You will also possess proven experience in managing staff and workloads in a high-volume and dynamic operational environment. Prior experience in a clinical trials setting or unit will be highly regarded. Your ability to initiate and build effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders coupled with your strong service ethic will set you up to succeed in this important role.
About Us
The
Clinical Trials Unit (CTU)
is part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences (FMHHS) at Macquarie University. FMHHS also has the Macquarie Medical School, the Macquarie University Private Hospital, and runs patient clinics, labs, imaging and a pharmacy all on campus in close proximity to support clinical trials, and support providing patients with access to state of the art treatments. The CTU undertakes sponsored and investigator initiated Phase I to IV trials across multiple therapeutic areas with multiple Principal Investigators. Our current team of over 60 staff (managing over 160 trials) are a close knit inclusive team with a supportive culture that values team work and innovation.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant business, finance or accounting qualifications (CPA/CA) and/or extensive experience (e.g. 5+ years ) in finance and accounting
  • Demonstrated breadth of financial and accounting experience (including managing accounts receivable, accounts payable, expenditure, revenue, and budgeting, and analysing / reporting on data), ideally in a clinical trials environment
  • Strong experience in month end close processes and preparation of financial statement
  • Demonstrated experience developing and coaching team members or/or colleagues including actively fostering a positive and supportive work environment
  • Excellent consultation and collaboration skills including the demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Experience in providing high quality and accurate finance guidance and support.
  • Advanced Computer skills including MS Office, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in process improvement and system implementation and rollout will be highly regarded.
