POSITION SUMMARY

This position provides the Co-Op Industrial Design Student, as part of their college studies, the experience of working in a world class design team in a regulated medical device company. The Co-Op will undertakes a vast selection of projects that is of mutual benefit to the company and to the student’s practical and academic learning.
What You Will Do–
As a member of the Industrial Design team, the Co-op Industrial Designer will receive mentorship from first class Industrial Designers in house. They will partner with Marketing quality and Engineering applying research methodologies with world-class healthcare professionals, to learn, grow and develop compelling design solutions (physical and digital) for our customers.
Human Centered Design techniques are crucial skills required to determine appropriate user experience, ergonomics, function, aesthetics, quality, and safety. You will be trained in Industrial Design professional processes and practice, human factors, Design Thinking and Customer Centred Design Techniques. The candidate will need to be a self starter, independent and an avid team player to learn, adapt and grow. The candidate must have a natural flair for design and stand out amongst their peers.
The candidate must have the ability to express their ideas and those of others through traditional ID sketching, model making, prototyping and presentation techniques. ID, UX development tools/ methodologies will be essential to create impactful concepts, user experiences and digital interactions.
This role will require a balance of rational and creative thinking processes and the ability to pull together inputs from diverse stakeholders. The candidate will be relentless in their passion to learn with an appetite to be the best. This role is a pure Industrial Design role where the candidate will sharpen their tools, learn new processes, interact with multiple SMEs and clinicians and get the opportunity to fail and learn fast on the world’s most exciting medical devices and systems.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The Co-Op Student, together with their Stryker Team Leader and their College Supervisor, identifies a design improvement project.
  • Delivers on the project briefs, objectives, scope, success factors, milestones, using detailed user research, sketching model making, prototyping, CAD, model making, painting, photography and 3D visualization rendering.
  • Documents a detailed project plan using the company’s project management template.
  • Implements the Design improvement project and meets the specified objectives and milestones.
  • Engage in customer research to better understand the needs of patients and the clinical environment. Interview and analysis of end-users, competitive landscape mapping, journey mapping, task analysis, risk mitigation through design, design and test ergonomic prototypes, and observe clinical procedures.
  • Leverage Human Factors and Human Centered Design (HCD) and user research methodologies to generate meaningful insights and inform the design process.
  • Develop concepts and rapid prototypes for the purposes of better understanding the product needs, testing hypotheses and the establishment of product requirements (from product design sketches to digital UX workflows, wireframes and interactive prototypes, and maybe physical models).
  • Participate (and sometimes present and lead) some aspects of the product development lifecycle.
  • Participate in design reviews, communicate design concepts to key stakeholders.
  • Be an advocate for Design, design process and design thinking.
  • Involves other key stakeholders and facilitates project meetings effectively.
  • Communicates project updates and presents at the relevant project review forums.
  • Provides support to the team and department by completing other activities as required.
  • Brings positivity and humility with a hunger to learn and make the most of all learning oppertunities.
  • As a student, effectively adapts to practically working in a workplace by being dependable, dependable, punctual, initiative-taking, hardworking, organized and a team-player.

What You Need–

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design / Product Design / Medical Design / Human Factors / Ergonomics etc
  • Portfolio samples that demonstrate your design process, methodologies, and experience from concept through to prototyping.
  • Good experience with illustrator is essential.
  • Some experience with photoshop desirable.
  • Experience with a CAD programme Solid Works preferred. Creo, Rhino, Fusion 360 or other software also accepted.
  • Knowledge of keyshot or another rendering package is desirable

  • Familiarity with iterative design processes, tools and strategies e.g(Research, Ideation, brainstorming, design thinking, sketching, aesthetic design, mood boards, style boards, CAD, prototyping, testing, rendering & user testing)
  • Physical model making competency and very good 3D modelling skills (SolidWorks, Creo, etc.)
  • Hunger to learn more about Human Factors studies and Ergonomics.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes
