The Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA) is the peak body representing Australia’s migrant and refugee services. Together with our 129 member organisations, we lead the settlement sector and broader society towards our vision of an Australia where all people of migrant and refugee backgrounds belong, thrive and experience fulfilling lives. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Communications Lead will be responsible for planning, development and implementation of SCOA’s communications and marketing strategy, supporting the communications components of various SCOA projects, driving impactful strategies to enhance media presence and elevate brand awareness.
This broad and hands-on role requires an experienced communications professional with strong cultural capability who enjoys working at an operational level but also leading strategic development. You will drive and measure outcomes and bring innovative and creative thinking, initiative, ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, strong communication (both written and verbal) and attention to detail.
You will lead the creation and execution of an impactful communications strategy, mapping out a comprehensive communications calendar, conducting media briefings, coordinating press releases, planning web content, managing event communications, and engaging with media representatives and high-level stakeholders.
In addition, you’ll supervise branding initiatives, working closely with media outlets and project partners—such as translators, graphic designers, video, and animation experts—and collaborating with platforms like SBS and radio stations. Your duties will also involve deciphering analytics, pulling together information for newsletters, online content, and producing PR materials for external media, including media releases and opinion pieces.

About You:

  • You possess exceptional written communication skills, evidenced by your ability to produce a wide range of materials including press releases, digital content, and speeches.
  • Your expertise extends beyond communication, as you demonstrate outstanding teamwork and project management skills, fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
  • You exercise cultural sensitivity and nuance in your work, ensuring communications are appropriately tailored to migrant and refugee communities, and you align seamlessly with SCOA’s vision of social cohesion and belonging.
  • Qualifications in public relations, communications, journalism, or marketing are highly desirable.
  • Previous experience within the For Purpose Sector further highlights your commitment to community service and social advocacy, making you an invaluable addition to our team.
