Description:
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the consultant team at the Welsh Centre of Burns and Plastic Surgery, based at Swansea Bay University Health Board. We are looking to recruit a keen and enthusiastic new colleague to join our friendly, forward-thinking teams in Orthoplastics & Pelvioncology/Trunk Reconstruction. The successful candidate would be required to undertake acute Major trauma work in the MTC in Cardiff as well as reconstructive orthoplastics and pelvioncology surgery in Morriston Hospital. They will join MDTs in both orthoplastics and pelvioncology.
There will also be an element of general plastic surgery work, including skin cancer. The post holder will join the Plastic surgery on call rota, until such time as an orthoplastic on call rota at the Major Trauma Centre is developed. This is a full-time substantive Consultant post based at Morriston Hospital but working across the Swansea Bay University Health board sites. The successful candidate will join a team of 25 plastic and reconstructive surgeons responsible for the provision of Burns and Plastic Surgical services for the population of South Wales.
The MTC is based in the University Hospital Wales and was opened in 2020. It sees over 180 new orthoplastics injuries a year and currently, although many cases can be managed on site, operates a hub and spoke model for complex free tissue reconstruction. The candidate will join a team of 5 substantive consultants with different skill sets who are committed to providing quality orthoplastic care to the welsh population. The pelvioncology component of the post is to replace the out-going consultant who will help train the successful candidate prior to retirement.
Approximately 25-30 cases are managed a year in a well-functioning and friendly MDT. Swansea is Wales second largest coastal city offering a superb work-life balance and a rich cultural environment, which is ideal for family life. The city is the gateway to the Gower Peninsula, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Walking, fishing, surfing, canoeing and sailing flourish in the area and Walkers/ ramblers are spoilt for choice.
The magnificent Worms Head snaking out to sea is one of the finest views in the world; yet you have all the facilities of urban life at hand. Excellent state and independent schools are available. There is easy access to the M4 corridor. Singleton is a University Teaching Hospital allied to the College of Medicine at the rapidly expanding Swansea University and is a designated training unit for higher specialist training in Wales.
We are consistently rated highly in the GMC junior doctors surveys. There are excellent teaching and collaborative research opportunities with Swansea and Cardiff Universities. The medical school is consistently ranked 3rd or 4th best in national student surveys
