Job Description
Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust invites applications for a substantive Consultant Clinical Oncologist with a specialist interest in gynaecological cancer. This is an exciting opportunity to work and join a highly motivated and well supported multi-disciplinary team.
Situated on the beautiful South Coast and adjacent to the South Downs National Park, yet only just over an hour from London by train, Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth offers the best of both worlds. Come and join our progressive and cohesive department, forging clinical excellence while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. IGRT, VMAT and 4D-CT are in routine use and a linac replacement programme to four cutting-edge Varian Trubeams (complete with 6 degree of freedom couches and 4D-CBCT) was completed in 2020. Interstitial brachytherapy was introduced in 2020, SABR for lung primaries commenced in 2021 and SABR for oligometastatic disease (bone and nodal metastases) commenced in December 2023. We are currently commissioning our new treatment planning software, Raystation, and this is expected to be in clinical use in May 2024.
Portsmouth Cancer Centre based at Queen Alexandra Hospital to the local population, as we as West Sussex (Chichester) and the Isle of Wight. We are a friendly and integrated Centre embracing enhanced radiographer, nursing and pharmacy roles, and actively encouraging research and innovation. A new postgraduate Portsmouth Medical School will open in September 2024 opening opportunities for academic and educational appointments.
This is 10 PA post, but applicants wishing to work less than full time are most welcome to discuss their requirements. In addition to gynaecological cancer, a second tumour type will be combined with a full-time post, which can include GI or Urology, or less than full time as gynae only, or gynae and lymphoma. We would be very happy to discuss options depending on the candidate’s interests.

JOB SUMMARY
There is a centralised Gynaecology MDT that includes 4 gynaecology oncology surgeons, who have a broad experience in open and minimally invasive surgeries, and two designated gynaecology radiologists; highly experienced in full range of imaging modalities including PET CT. Outpatient clinics, radiotherapy and chemotherapy under the clinical oncology team are delivered at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth whilst medical oncology colleagues cover chemotherapy at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester alongside Queen Alexandra. There is an established HDR brachytherapy program for gynaecological cancers, including Interstitial brachytherapy, supported by a highly experienced team of radiographers and physicists. The recently developed SABR service provides treatment for oligometastatic disease. The Gynaecology team is research active with a broad portfolio of clinical studies and strong track record of recruitment into clinical trials. Work is supported by a dedicated research team, including two newly appointed research radiographers. The MDT includes by a number of experienced and enthusiastic nurse specialists, who support both curative and metastatic patient cohorts, alongside a designated cancer care co-ordinator.
A second interest will be accommodated depending on preferences. Options include lymphoma, urology, skin and Upper GI. However, the department could potentially accommodate other second tumor sites, therefore candidates are encouraged to discuss their preferences with the department.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights
- An appropriate higher Clinical Oncology qualification
- Evidence of a clinical or research fellowship
