Description:

Applications are invited for a substantive post within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. Candidates must have full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and be on the Specialist Register of the GMC under Intensive Care Medicine.
The successful candidates will join an enthusiastic team of 19 Critical Care Consultants, 13 Trainees, 21 Middle Grade Doctors, 3 ACCP’s and 2 trainee ACCP’s in delivering Critical Care services across both Royal Preston and Chorley Hospital sites.
The Critical Care unit currently has recently completed a multi-million-pound upgrade and expansion to 34 state-of-the-art beds on the RPH site, with additional Covid surge beds opened as required. Our Covid response was praised as a positive outlier in the 2020 “Getting it Right First Time” report.

THE POST HOLDER WILL: -

  • Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services for the Department.
  • Participate in the critical care consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleagues’ absence.
  • Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
  • Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.
We work weekday and weekend block working patterns, with on-calls worked as a block once every 8 weeks. We have a mid-week handover incorporating Morbidity and Mortality and Rehabilitation MDT meetings.
The Department is committed to teaching and research.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides a wide range of general hospital services to around 370,000 people from the Chorley, South Ribble and Preston areas.
We are one of the largest Critical Care Units in the Northwest of England, admitting over 1600 patients every year. In addition we provide specialist services to around 1.5 million people from Lancashire and South Cumbria. This includes Neurosurgery, Major Head and Neck surgery and Gynae-oncology.
The Trust is designated as both a Major Trauma Centre and Vascular Centre.
The Trust provides coaching services from experienced members of the human resources team, and new consultants are allocated a mentor to ensure a seamless transition into the consultant workforce.
