Description:
This is a part-time post (6.75PA) for a Consultant Medical Microbiologists at the Royal United Hospital. An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic and ambitious individual to join a dynamic team of 5.1 WTE Consultants.
At the RUH, you will join an enthusiastic and committed team comprising of a total of 5.1 WTE Consultant Microbiologists and a laboratory manager.
The laboratory services are performed by staff at Severn Pathology in Bristol. There is an on-site Hot Lab handling blood cultures, CSF and tissue samples with the majority of other microbiology and virology samples being processed at the Severn Pathology laboratory in Bristol. The laboratory in Bath has a cepheid machine enabling the laboratory to perform on-site processing of samples for C difficile, norovirus, influenza and SARS CoV-2. The microbiology department is situated in a new purpose-built laboratory and has full UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation.
The Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Foundation Trust provides acute hospital services for approximately 500,000 people living in Somerset, Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire. The Trust provides a comprehensive range of acute services including medicine and surgery, services for women and children, accident and emergency services, and diagnostic and clinical support services. The pathology department provides services to the acute trust, a number of community hospitals and a wide rural GP catchment area.
At the RUH site shared responsibility with other Consultant Medical Microbiologists (CMM) for:
Clinical liaison in a timely manner with hospital staff and general practitioners on appropriate investigations and interpretation of results relating to the treatment, management and prevention of infections and epidemiological matters
Daily laboratory liaison with the RUH “Hot Lab”
Liaison with medical and technical staff at UKHSA and Severn Pathology
Liaison with Health Protection staff as applicable
Authorisation and interpretation of laboratory reports from both the RUH and Bristol laboratories
Daily ward rounds on the Adult Intensive Care Unit
Other ward rounds and multi-disciplinary team meetings e.g. with the haematology/oncology ward, orthopaedic and cardiology teams and other teams regularly or as required
Regular Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) Ward Rounds together with the Antimicrobial Pharmacist
Review of all new Clostridium difficile cases, a weekly C difficile ward round, review of patients with Staph aureus bacteraemia and other complex patients
Liaison with the IPC and AMS teams as required
Liaison with the Out-Patient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) Nurses including review and follow up of referrals
Involvement in policy and guideline development and review
Involvement in Laboratory Management
