Description:

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our team of 8 WTE neonatologists at our tertiary level medical NICU in St. Peter’s Hospital, Surrey on a permanent contract to expand the team. This is a full time (10PA) post. We are the lead NICU for Surrey and are well known for our forward-thinking non-invasive approach to intensive care, including the use of mobile high flow in the delivery room, early adopters for deferred cord clamping, high rates of 2 year neurodevelopmental follow up and recently embracing use of point of care ultrasound for lines and lung scans. We have a close working relationship with our high-risk obstetric service jointly with St George’s fetal medicine team to look after complex and extremely preterm infants. St Peter’s hosts the Surrey Neonatal Transport Team, a collegial effort, together forming the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Neonatal Transfer Service. We provide consultant on call cover to the service, as well as support and training to the transport team.

The successful post holder will participate fully in the consultant rota for NICU and Neonatal transport service as one of 11 to 11.5 WTE consultants based on LTFT consultant workforce and will share in the neonatal attending rota.
Provide out-patient services as necessary for neonatal patients.
Provide direct consultant led clinical care to patients, through all parts of the department by assisting clinical decision-making and sharing equally in the workload.
The Consultant team will provide comprehensive senior clinical cover to promote and develop a regional perinatal service by working jointly with Maternity team.
Engage fully with the care of patients outside the department and provide a prompt opinion on request from consultant colleagues in other specialties.
Engage with medical, nursing, AHP’s, management and all relevant co-workers in the delivery of department objectives to provide clinical leadership, improve the patient experience; ensure the highest quality clinical care.
Actively participate and support other staff with education, teaching, research, quality improvement, audit and clinical governance activities, leadership and management roles involving a multi-disciplinary workforce across the department.
Support recruitment, appraisal, development and mentoring activities to a multi-disciplinary, multi-professional team.
Undertake any other duties appropriate for a consultant.
Any changes will be by negotiation and reflected in the job plans of the team.

The job plan will be broadly based on the information below. The timings of the sessions indicated may alter slightly, but the overall composition of the job plan is not expected to change significantly without expansion of the team/further team discussions.
Consultant Neonatologist (10 PA post) will continue to follow a 11-week cycle. This advertised post will share a line on the rota with an existing consultant team who will also contribute to the KSS NTS service separate to the neonatal unit cover. There may be additional clinical hours required to cover the DCC activities based on the service needs in future. With the new rota, the initial plan is for transport cover in day time to be onsite and is expected to be able to go out for transport to support middle grade doctors and nursing team., while the transport cover for after 6 pm and overnight will be predominantly offsite unless need to be accompanying transport team on an ad-hoc basis based on the situation.
The job plan of a 10PA NICU consultant is set out below: A template for the 11 week cycle is provided in the PDF document.
Circa 7.00 DCC PA (with prospective cover) and 2.75 SPA (1SPA core, 0.25 -0.5 SPA for lead roles within the service and additional educational supervision SPA) to the Neonatal Intensive Care.
And
Additional 0.26 DCC PA for responsibility allowance towards KSS Neonatal Transport service for non-resident cover in the evening for 2 nd on team after 6 pm and night cover.
Making a 7.25 DCC / 2.75 SPA overall post.
The equivalent of one day off per week is bult in during weeks 2,3, 6, 7, 8,10 and 11 for a 10 PA contract.
Consultant On-Call Rota (Frequency of rota/detail of rota)
The post holder will be required to participate in the department rota on a 1:11 to 11.5 basis based on LTFT consultant workforce. The on-call availability supplement will be Category A Low Frequency. This is built within the rolling rota. The PAs may be adjusted, subject to the job-plan and agreed work commitment, such as prospective colleague cover and additional duties.

SUPPORTING PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES (SPA):

ASPH is committed to ensuring that all Consultants have dedicated SPAs within their job plan which they will be expected to carry out on site/ in the workplace. Specific responsibilities will be developed on appointment and according to areas of interest, but Supporting Professional Activities (SPA’s) are intended to include
Audit and QI, research, and local clinical governance activity
Formal teaching and preparation (e.g. lectures, seminars)
Post-graduate teaching, and training (e.g. junior doctors, medical students, nurses)
External teaching and education delivery (e.g. NLS, ARNI)
Clinical management, attendance at departmental and Trust meetings
Appraisal, Job planning and rota organisation
Service development, quality improvement work, Major incident planning
SPA activity will be scheduled based on individual preference and the needs of the neonatal service. This will also include lead roles within the team to cover special interest areas as per needs of the department, attendance at the clinical governance meetings, service development meetings within NICU, and joint service meetings with Obstetrics and Paediatrics within the division.
