Job Title: Controller
Status: Full Time, Permanent
FTE: 1.0 (40 hours/week)
Vacancies: 1
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Location: The Newly Institute Corporate Head Office (#120, 2303 4 St SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2S7)

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Strategy and Planning:

  • Develop and implement financial strategies, plans, and policies to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of The Newly Institute.
  • Prepare, scrutinize, and interpret financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Conduct internal and external financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and risks, and evaluate opportunities, and advise the Executive Team on financial implications of business activities and decisions.
  • Monitor cash flow, manage working capital, and optimize capital structure.
  • Oversee all aspects of financial management, including accounting, treasury, tax planning, and risk management.
  • Lead merger and acquisition integration processes to ensure seamless financial transitions.

Operational Leadership:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the Finance team, including management of financial operations, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Ensure cash flow is aligned with operations by overseeing day-to-day accounting, recording, reporting, and internal-control activities of the Company.
  • Maintain accurate financial records using QuickBooks Online.
  • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements per generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Perform bank and account reconciliations on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, and resolve accounting discrepancies in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Lead payroll processing activities, including payroll calculations and statutory deductions.
  • Manage relationships with external stakeholders, including, but not limited to, vendors, auditors, banks, and investors.
  • Drive continuous improvement and alignment with best practices, leveraging technology to automate and streamline financial processes.

People Management:

  • Recruit, onboard, develop, engage, and retain a skilled Accounting and Finance team.
  • Oversee all aspects of performance management for Finance employees, including coaching and mentoring, performance reviews, and progressive discipline.
  • Address employee relations issues in collaboration with the People & Culture Team
  • Ensure direct reports have role clarity and understand their key accountabilities and key performance indicators.
  • Communicate Occupational Health & Safety initiatives in the clinic to ensure compliance with company policies.
  • Foster an effective, collaborative, and healthy working environment and champion The Newly’s core Values.

Governance, Risk, and Compliance:

  • Perform risk management through analysis of Company liabilities and investments, and evaluate and manage capital structure and fundraising initiatives.
  • Communicate potential risks to the Executive Team in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and accounting standards.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits and liaise with auditors to provide necessary documentation and support.
  • Stay informed regarding changes in accounting standards and regulations, advising the Executive Team on potential impacts and opportunities.

EXPERIENCE

  • Five (5) years of demonstrated experience within accounting and finance roles of increasing responsibility.
  • Three (3) years of experience supporting the planning, implementation, management, and control of all accounting and finance activities.
  • Two (2) years of experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, and investor relations.
  • Two (2) years proven accounting and finance experience within an organization of similar size, complexity, growth stage, and/or industry sector.

EDUCATION

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance or related field is required.
  • A Master’s Degree Business Administration or related field is an asset.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the President you will guide The Newly’s financial systems, and ensuring the Company’s finances are positioned for continued growth and success. The Controller will oversee The Newly Institute’ s Finance Team, supervising accounting operations from payroll to tax compliance, and assist with the development of internal control policies, accounting policies, procedures, reporting, and financial planning as needed.
