EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (Please attach all required documents)

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent required
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean driving abstract required
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in the marine territory required
  • Small Vessel Operators Proficiency (SVOP) certification and vessel experience is an asset or willingness to obtain
  • SVD-BS (formerly MED A1, A2 or A3) is an asset or willingness to obtain
  • WHIMIS is an asset or willingness to obtain
  • Restricted Operator Certificate with Maritime Qualification (ROC-M) is an asset or willingness to obtain
  • Small Engine Repairs is an asset or willingness to obtain
  • First Aid Training is an asset or willingness to obtain
  • SCUBA certification is an asset or willingness to obtain
  • Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Effective December 1, 2021: full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to be eligible for employment at Cowichan Tribes. All individuals must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of their employmen

Responsibilities:

  • Integrate local and traditional knowledge to help manage and steward lands and waters, and help support implementation of resource management plans and agreements
  • Observe, record & report; the activity of interest for commercial and recreational vessels in our waters; the presence of derelict vessels and potential spills; and the presence of herring spawn, whale activity, marine birds, urchin and kelp bed abundance, and monitor beach activity, especially with regard to shellfish & culturally significant sites etc.
  • Assist the Captain and Crew Member to consult maps, charts, weather reports to prepare trip plans and safety communications.
  • Collaborate with the SSW team in prioritizing and conducting environmental monitoring, research & data collection and to prioritize and conduct ecological restoration work
  • Engage with community and general public for the purpose of outreach and education, public ensuring that laws, regulations, guidelines, and protocols are understood and to report out on work of the crew
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and maintain accountability through record keeping (daily activities, meetings and email communications), and generating monthly reports and work plans as directed
  • Participate in Emergency safety drills for vessel safety as scheduled, and all other safety planning activities
  • Engage in the Emergency Spill Response training and response, and other training as required
  • Other related duties as required
